What do you consider the best length for.....

a spreader bar? Hubby has decided to make one for us to use but we're unsure on the best length, I just wondered what some of you had used and found the best length. I know it will be a personal test thing but some actual testimonials would be very helpful.

Thanks

I picked up this thing at Walmart. It's a bar that is designed to fit across the back seat of a car to hang suits and stuff on. It adjusts from 3 feet to 7 feet or so with no tools needed. Makes a good bar. I'm not certain, but I believe it is what the chick in the movie Secretary is wearing in the opening scene.

But they are so easy and cheap to make from wood there is no reason you couldn't have several standard lengths if you had a play room to store them. Say, from 12 inches, increasing by 6 inches up to five feet.

But if you are traveling with a bag I'd go with the standard dowel length of 4 feet.

Hmm, I definitely like the idea of a couple of different lengths, hmm, hand't thought of that. I bet he has though! I'll make sure to get him to read this later.

Thank you

mine is about 3 ft wide or a little wider. It works well for me. i wouldn't mind it being a little wider though. Hope that helps.

I'm not tall so 3 feet is my limit if I'm to wear one for half an hour or more. You also need to consider how wide you can spread and still balance easily. Cramp is not sexy - not even for us masochists.

Actually Lee is wearing a medieval restraining device made of iron consisting of a collar and bars, popular with slavers and others wanting to allow movement, but not "free movement".

For spreader bars, 36" is a pretty standard length. As WriterDom suggested, the adjustable bars for cars are pretty handy... and deniable. *grin*

If you don't want the adjustable one, adding or subtracting double ended dog clips make things a little more flexible.

36" would be fine. Start longer with the first one. You can always cut a few inches off. You can't add inches back on.
