In the eighties and nineties, boycotting things seemed to be very popular. People were being political in their shopping habits and boycotting power really seemed to make a difference. But is it as rife in the twenty first century?

Personally I have never been particularly good at not buying things. I currently boycott Israeli goods but that really isn't very difficult to do as there are very few around. Similarly a lot of people in the UK are currently boycotting US products (myself not included as I enjoyed a lovely bit of alaskan salmon recently) but again there are hardly any american ingredients in the supermarkets.

Do you boycott anything?

Really? First I've heard of it.

I think it is mostly amongst the leftwing middle classes. Three members of my family boycott US products for instance.

I refuse to buy any american weapons. Particularly nuclear ones.

And Apache helecoptors.

I dont buy the News of the Screws after that expose they did on me the other week :D

But apart from that - no I buy what I want and at the right price regardless of where it comes from

I even shop at Netto now and again and buy some dubious continental product -

Thought about not buying Japanese products after watching Bridge over the River Kwai ( ? sp ) - but sson realised I would have no HI Fi, PC screen, printer, so ditched that idea

I always but Philips TV's as have had one for 15 years and still going strong

Oh, you mean the rich buggers who can afford to be choosey!

The ordinary punter in the supermarket looks for quality and value, origin comes way down the list. Those British shoppers who are interested in origin are usually checking to see if it is British not to boycott another county's goods.

shit ........busted

That one has gone pretty quiet now - havent made my mind up on him

sure he was a bit of a bastard and obvioulsy had little respect for women - but all these anonymous people coming forward and as soon as you hear the name Max Clifford - you wonder . The guys career is now totaly fucked -

apparently Ulrika and him dated for over 3 months after the incident - I think she would quite like that can of worms to slowly dissapear

My my, that wouldn't be a working class chip I see on your shoulder would it?

I suppose you are going to tell me that boycotting South African goods for all those years was a middle class luxury. Proper working class folk cant be worrying about that sort of thing now can they - they are too busy reading the fucking news of the world to worry about any of that.

Blown your chances of being the new Have I got News For You Presenter then.

We've had a Boycott Israel thing going on for ages. Not much effect, since I have never seen Israeli produce. It much be out there somewhere...

During the French nuclear tests in the Pacific a few years back, the French product boycott had a big effect. French wine sales down 30%.

The madcow show didn't produce a boycott, but alot of people bought local beef or German beef.

I go out of my way to buy Budva beer from Czech (not every time, it's pricey), in order to pay for their lawyer bills in their neverending quest against Budweiser in the states. I like an underdog.

And if it IS British, they put back because it's probably unsafe to eat :)

I am boycotting buying into some of this Brit bullshit I keep reading here.

What a strange response - there have been no anti-american remarks made on this thread.

Its a simple question of politics and shopping.

I really am interested to hear about people's boycotting activites and less intersted in hearing about Angus Deayton and John Leslie (go highjack another thread chaps).

Coolville - I'm with you on the budvar thing though mainly because it actually tastes of beer.

sorry for highjacking your thread - but where a thread goes nobody knows ( old chinese proverb )

anyway to get back to the point -

We probably have more goods from more countries than anywher here - we dont buy British as a rule

We like NZ lamb, Danish bacon, french cheese

Auzie wine, german beer , Japanese cars , etc etc - I dont think half the country really know what is British or not - shit half the nation think Ford is a UK company. and trade boycots are a bad thing - unless the country you are boyvotting is so weak it doesnt matter

I dont buy jeruslame artichokes or Portobello Mushrooms ( dont like people from Portobello )

hey what is your problem ?? -

you came in to an intersting thread that had nothing to do with the US or you and are starting to be a bit arsy

wait an hour or two till Hanns shows up and go and banter with him

Oh my god, you mean Ford isn't British! Get away, next thing you'll be telling me that Rover isn't either ...

Why the portobello thing by the way, lol

When you're at a party (assuming you had friends) and a group of people are having a civil discussion, do you push your way into the group and shout, "What a bunch of assholes!"

No?

Then don't bother doing it here.

I haven't seen any bashing of any sort in this thread. Until you showed up.

you gentlemen (and I use that term loosely) are so intimidating.

You start a thread and refer to boycotting American products and that is strictly innocent and well meaning?
