So I've been wondering, what do you like and dislike about where you live?

What I like about Denmark:

I like that the sun rises at 04:40 am and sets at 10:02 pm on the longest day of the year.
That nobody dies because they can't afford to go see a doctor.
Free education (ok you have to pay your books yourself).

What I dislike about Denmark:
25% sales tax on everything, even food
The high taxes on cars.
The little daylight we get in the wintertime

I'm sure I'll come up with more.

Oregon:

I like the weather.

I like that the biggest bug is really small.

I that my family is here.

I don't like I can't get health insurance.

I don't like the Multnomah Co. tax.

I'm sure their's lots more I like and dislike, but my head is woozy and heavy. I'm going to bed. G'night.

What I like about Canada;

Legal gay marriage
Health care
Anti-smoking laws
Bi-lingual (even though some people are jerks about it)

What I dislike;

Weather
"I support Canadian Beef" stickers on the back of pickup trucks.
Avril Lavigne.

What I like about Michigan:

My best friend is here.
I know where the disc-golf courses in my area are.
Autumn is gorgeous!
BUT what I like best is that once school is done I can leave!!!

What I dislike:

WINTER!!!
Not much to do that doesn't involve going to the bar at night.
I can't go anywhere it seems without running into co-workers lol.

i live in SouthEastern TAX-achusetts.

i DISLIKE it here because:

...it's too daymn cold & snowy during the winter months, and too cold rainy during the spring.
... we pay too much for income tax, yet our public school system is always over budget, understaffed, undersupplied .. and all of the school's computers are unusable.
... we pay to much for taxes, yet the streets are littered with trash, and plagued with potholes big enough to eat a small truck (or child).
... even though we pay very high taxes .. we have unsafe highway overpasses which the city and state knows are falling apart bit by bit & the past 5 years have been the cause of cement slabs and other things landing on the automobiles of unsuspecting motorists as they pass underneath these structures.
... just across the highway exists a HUGE mountain which is actually a landfill site. It's got to be at least 20 stories high by now. We do have an even bigger incinerator site which has been broken for at least the past 10 years because the city didn't feel it would be worth the expense to repair the incinerator.
... we are being FUCKED UP THE ASS with the amount of state and local taxes we pay & yet our children travel in excess of 4 miles (that's half way across the city) just to attend the nearest Junior High School (we have 5 public Middle Schools), and although the state laws state that any child who must travel in excess of 2.5 miles MUST be provided with public transportation to and from school each day ...... they covered their asses by providing our children with 'a general public serving inner city bus system' (yes, our 10, 11, 12, 13 & 14 year old ride PUBLIC BUSES half way across a mid-sized city .. with god knows what/who else is allowed to ride the same bus ... ) .... and the kicker of it all ........ we parents have to PAY for these buses (alkthough we do get a 20% discount for our students ... whip-EE-fuckin-DOO)
...our town is famous for it's ax wacking mascot who lived in the late 1800's .. Miss Lizzy Borden herself ... (i am so tired of the friggin story by now) ... Lizzy Borden took an ax ... gave her father 40 wacks ... when she'd seen what she had done, gave her mother 41... i am so sick of that jingle.

i LIKE it here because:

... my family and friends are here.
... although two of the seasons are most often TOO FRIGGIN COLD for me ... the other two are warm enough to make it seem worth suffering the other 6 months out of the year.
... it was good enough for the pilgrims ... so who am i to complain.
... we always have fresh seafood.
... we have lakes, rivers and beaches in all directions (river being a stones throw from my backdoor, beaches being no more than a 20 minute drive south.
... the autumn display is breathtakingly awesome.
... whether anyone else approves of it or not ... SAME SEX MARRIAGE is LEGAL here ... as it SHOULD BE... and i'm damn proud of this state for at least that much.
... there are many clothing outlets nearby with SUPER CHEAP discounts on many good name brand manufacturers ..... most being made in the USA.
... most importantly .... this is *HOME*.

Hey! Same here. i think it's a good thing. Even if it doesn't benefit me ... it's just something i support ... 100%.

What I like about South Florida...

Cool wildlife
Lower living costs than California where I used to live
Being in the sub-tropics
Great weather (if you don't mind humidity)

What I dislike

Hurricanes
Big ass bugs
the current governor
Headless drivers.

Alberta:

I like the fact that you can actually be somewhat picky on where you want to work. That is to say, with no education, you can refuse to work in the retail industry and still find lots of slots for yourself to fill in.

I like the long summer days. I'm on the same latitude as Denmark.

I like the fact that the biggest bug here is the bug that works for you - the Dragonfly.

I like the summer nights when the sun never stops sending light over the horizon as it rests.

I dislike the bitter cold we can experience during the winter.

I dislike the short winter days.

You only get 7 hours and 22 minutes of sunlight on your longest day of the year?

I like Kansas because...
1. The weather is normally comfortably mild. It doesn't get too hot or too cold except for on rare occassions.
2. It's beautiful. I don't care what anyone says, this state has the most wonderful sunsets. And sunrises but I haven't seen too many of them.
3. KU Basketball...enough said.
4. Almost everyone I love is here.

I hate this fucking hell hole because...
1. People don't know how to drive. In smaller towns (like mine) they drive 5 mph everywhere they go and they drive like they have a deathwish in the city.
2. We have kind of a drug problem here and we're nationally know for it.
3. Everyone thinks it's flat, ugly and boring.

Welcome to my world. Only everyone is right in thinking it's ugly flat and boring and we're known for car thefts and violent crimes (highest violent crime rate per capita WOO! Regina represent yo).

Minnesota:

I like my rent. People have no idea how good they have it in terms of rents.

I like the Missisissippi river vista downtown.

I like that I can go to the ER and be seen in about an hour on a busy ass night, 1 second on a not busy night. People have no idea what "waiting" really is. The nurses are awesome too, no one seems so burnt out they can't be friendly. MN is a pretty good place to be sick, if you have to pick and you have to be in the states.

It's actually more diverse here than you'd think, I gravitate towards more diverse neighborhoods in terms of where I like to live and be. It's possible to find a neighborhood where you will not hear English on the street, and to me that's sometimes a very comforting thing.

We have some inordinate insane percentage of GLBT people - I think it's like 12-15, something, as opposed to that oft quoted 10 percent. That's actually a big increase. This is a very queer town, in which I am much more comfortable.

Good art scene, good place to be an artist if you actually want people to SEE your work, not just pine for making it big time when you never will.

What I hate:

Minnesota nice. It's really Minnesota racist smug ass xenophobic passive aggression. Don't patronize me and then talk shit about me later. Don't tell me I'm indispensible and then fire me out of the blue because you don't have the balls to give me the come-to-Jesus talk at work. Assholes.

The people who are doing their best to ruin everything good about a generally socially liberal, socially served, chill and laid back state. I hate the governor with a passion. I hate the senator with a passion.

-60 below windchill. 108 heat index. Nuff said.\

St. Paul city planning (?) I still don't know how to get around there.

Pros of Ontario

1. Sporting Capital of Canada. We've got the Leafs, Senators, Blue Jays, Raptors, Argonauts, Ti-Cats, and Renegades.

2. We've got Toronto, which is simply the best city in the world. Bar-none. It's clean, it's vibrant, and it's friendly. What else could you ask for? Runner-up would be Ottawa with it's fantastic archetiecture and public parks.

3. Superb roads and civil infrastructure. It sounds mundane, but it's still very important. Ontario highways are among the safest and fastest in North America. Our government operated public transit service (GO Transit) is top knotch, as well.

Cons of Ontario

1. The weather is a hassle. Southern Ontario has one of the most extreme annual climates in the world. This means we get bitterly cold winters and INSANELY hot and humid summers.

2. Health Care is falling apart. This is a growing concern for all provinces, but Ontario has it especially rough. After the previous provincial government decimated the public health care system, little has been down to rebuild the under-funded and under-serviced system. Nowadays, the politicians look to the United States for ideas, and a privatized health service looks more likely with each passing day.

3. Urban Sprawl. As the cities around Lake Ontario develop and grow, a lot of prime farmland is lost to make way for housing subdivisions. It can be a bit disconcerting at times to see how much land is being used up for tract housing and strip malls that could be better used or developed more efficiently.

Oops small typo. I meant to write that the sun sets at 10:02 pm.

Well, Ontario was already done, but that's where I live so here goes,
I love the diversity in my neighbourhood, there are soooooo many different cultures! It's great to hear all the different languages and try all the different food! UMM!!

I do have to agree that having the capital of Canada is awesome and Ottawa has a whole bunch of FREE museums!

Two places: the Royal Ontario Musuem and the Art Gallery of Ontario! Both in Toronto and both very cool, we just hosted an exhibit from the British Museum of some of their great Egyptian artifacts! It was amazing and was included in the admission!

I love the accepting nature all over Canada, most people don't care what you do in your own home and I love that Toronto has one of the biggest celebrations for Pride Week, BTW the Pride parade was yesterday and it looked like it was a lot of fun, I couldn't go though. :(

And we are getting this eventually!
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/farecard/
But not untill 2007 although when it does become available I'm so getting one!

What I hate is,
corrupt government officials, ya we have em here too.

The mess of the public service sector our last government left! I agree that the Health Care system needs a major overhaul!

Lack of funding for public schools.

The temperature extremes! I love warm weather, but I hate the cold and it gets bitterly cold here and I can't stand it!

likes and dislikes

Ok, my two cents worth.

Likes about Oklahoma:

Normally very mild winters (if it snows, it's gone the next day)
Friendly people who still wave in small towns and will stop to see if you need help if your broken down on the side of the road. Ask anyone for directions and they will gladly tell you what you need to know, (with a few extra facts thrown in for interest) A deverse culture. Yes we have the typical cowboys and native americans, but we also have a large hispanic, asian, polish, and german communities. We have theatre, culture and a wide range of music to choose from.

This state has produced many great actors, musicians and sports professionals. Ask anyone who lives here and they can tell you the exact day football season starts. We're big on our college teams and support them all!

We have many types of landscapes to choose. From little Sahara with its sand dunes to lush rolling hills. Flat open fields to sparkling lakes.

Dislikes:

During tornado season (March 1 to October 31) at any time there is a thunderstorm, you can bet your favorite tv program or movie is going to be interupted by the weather man tellling you that with in 3 hours it's going to be on top of you. Then once it's passed, continuing to follow it on the map until it's out of the state.

Politics - nothing else needs to be said.

Rising drug uses, over crowded prisons, restrictive religous radicals that try to control every aspect of others lives. (yes it's the middle of the bible belt)

110 degree heat in August and absolutely no breeze to be had! Oh and lets not forget to add the 60 to 80 percent humidity to that!

Its really interesting hearing about where everyone lives

I live in the county of Lancashire, United Kingdom.

Things I like about it here.

It has one of the lowest costs of living in the UK. Our rent is pretty cheap, as is food and entertainment. That makes a difference, you know, month after month it all builds up. I nearly went to university in London  the prices there are through the roof.

We are close to the lake district, which is a superb area of natural beauty- great for walking and camping. If you're a literature buff, think Wordsworth and Shelley.

The campus university I live it is very picturesque and has lots of nice places to chill, and in the summer have barbeque's.

Everything is so compact, I can totally cope without a car, and public transport is pretty great if you're just making a local trip (nationally its a nightmare).

It is so safe here. Thats important to me. I can walk around unaccompanied after dark, I can go for early morning walks and go into most pubs and clubs without fear.

The library is excellent and has a fantastic music collection.

Things I hate about here

The weather. It rains all the fucking time, and is eternally Grey.

The cultural backwater of this town. Nothing ever goes on and theres no alternative music scene to speak of, let alone anything like a munch or a mad pride group or anything I'd really like to get into.

The fact that there are nothing else but the mundane high street branded shops here, nothing with much individuality.

I miss live music.

The architecture is so horrid, all 1960's concrete horrendous shit that does not fill my world with sunshine.

The insane drink till you drop culture that consumes everything and everyone in this god forsaken town each weekend.

Actually, seeing as how I lived in the UK for three years up until very recently, I'll also chime in with the Pros and Cons of Edinburgh.

Pros of Edinburgh

1. Castles. There are castles all over the freakin' place over here! I've moved flats four times during my stay in Edinburgh and three of them lived a maximum of five minutes walk from a castle. Of course the city is more famous for the big one, Edinburgh Castle, which strangely enough, I never had a chance to see from the inside.

2. Football. Edinburgh is home to Hibernian Fc (Yay!) and Heart of Midlothian FC (Boo!), both of which play in the Scottish Premier League. Just my luck that Hibs have a phenomenal season the first year I come back to Canada.

3. Pubs, Clubs, and Restaurants. The city has fantastic places to eat drink and dance, and weekends are never dull when you've got some spending money. The Cowgate area of time is particularly busy on a Friday and Saturday night. Ahhh, good times.

Cons of Edinburgh

1. NEDS. Non-Educated Deliquents are found all across the city. These little schemy bastards are recognizable for their white shell suits, plaid burberry ball caps, and primal dispositions. Of all the scraps I've been into during my stay, ALL of them involved NEDS. Luckily, I've had a few good friends back me up and helped kick some sense into the little hoodlums.

2. Expensive. Everything in Edinburgh seems to have a few extra pennies attached to the price tag for simply being in Scotland. I'm not totally sure why that is. It's just so expensive to buy just about anything. When you work a blue-collared production job, you don't normally end up with much left after food, drinks, and rent.

3. News is crap. This can apply to the UK as a whole. Newspapers will do anything and try to sensationalise the slightest story to sell issues. Most of what we get to read is little more than gossip and fear-mongering. I can only think of two newspapers I can tolerate reading over there. The rest are total garbage for your brain.

Well since we're moving in 4 days, I can't tell you what I like/dislike about our new home town, except it's very small :D

What I like about Lafayette In...

Karen and Holly
College town, so pretty good vareity of restruants.
Only two hours from Chicago, restruants, sports and great museums.

What I dislike about this town...
Everyone drives 30mph in a 40mph zone.
Too many college students, makes me feel old.
Too many liberals.

I live in the northern end and concur whole-heartedly with your dislikes and will add the abundance of rebel flags on the back of pick-em-up trucks.

As for likes, I'll add:
Wisteria (which my SO brings in and hangs from the door ways)
Magnolia blossoms (which smell like lemon and vanilla, and can be placed in the fridge to keep fresh til you are ready to spread the petals out on the bed. Incidentally they also feel and look glorious cupping a pair of breasts)
Empty malls on the Saturdays of college football games
The Georgian accent with a bit of a city twist

Likes about saskatchewan

the beautiful sunsets you can see
the fact that a moose can wander through the city(yes we've had moose walk through the city)
how you can get to anywhere in the city about 15 minutes from where you are.

dislikes:

Winter can be to fcking cold some days.
To much snow some years and no snow days.
The difficulty in finding a worthwhile dom.

Charlotte, NC

Likes:

I grew up here so I can generally find anything anywhere.

Most of my family is here - much to Master's chigrin (I am the seventh of nine kids and there are about eighteen neices and nephews and about fifteen extended family members - he is the second of two kids and no neices and nephews and no extended family)

Trees - there is lots of greenery for a city of our size (several million in the metropolitain area)

There are several Asian eateries that are very decent within a five minute drive from where we live.

The wonderful, extrodianary Dilworth Coffee House - also less than a five minute drive from home.

My mom is a ten minute drive away.

Dislikes:

The freakin' City Council and it's Mayor who are all in Bank of America's pocket.

The #$%@! Arena which a majority of people voted against in the referendum which will open up this fall for the new NBA team.

The fact that our school system gets several hundred thousand dollars a year but kids are short on books and supplies.

The fact that to get to the other side of the city (we on the outskirts on the Northwest side) it takes over an hour.

Taxes, taxes and more taxes to pay for special projects that never make it to our side of the city (the South side gets everything because that's where all the bankers and city council members live).

I-485....it was started when I was in high school in the 80s...it's still not finished...and they are delaying the finishing of it to widen an already done section in the ##$%% south side of town.

Our roads are in horrendous shape...they are laying off police and fire people, yet hiring new ones...but there is enough money in the budget to pay for weird art for the road sides and for a Nascar Hall of Fame and for a basketball arena which will never sell out more than a handful of times and for raises for the city council and the mayor. Oh, and for the county commissioners to go fully paid to Hawaii for some kind of convention for city leaders.

Ummm...I guess I'd better stop before I go off on a full tangent rant lol

The #$%@! Arena which a majority of people voted against in the referendum which will open up this fall for the new NBA team.

In Oshawa, we've also been given a brand-spanking new arena for hockey and concerts, despite the negative reaction the community showed during it's proposal.

The catch is that the city taxpayers foot the bill to construct it, pay Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment a fee to operate it, and pay for the extra police, fire, and civil groups to service it.

On top of all that, we still have to buy tickets to watch the game!
