What do you do when someone disagrees?

That happens here a lot, when someone disagrees with you, particularly if it's one of those "hot" topics like abortion or something that you can find yourself equally offended by the opposing viewpoint, what do you do? How do you feel? How do you handle it? Do you think that you've handled past offensensitive subjects in past posts like you think you do?

Beat them to a bloody, oozy puddle then get a friend to help you bury the body..........;) ;)

Hot topics are often difficult to keep a lid on....I guess I just LISTEN as carefully as possible, and try to comprehend their STUPID IDIOTIC ways...........Arghhhhhh I guess I am not much help here KM............ ;)

Learn to disagree agreeably.

Remember that some people just have to get in the last word even if it's about who says "goodbye" last, and they are very dangerous on more meaningful topics.

Pick your fights.

Phone ahead, april and I can only bury so many bodies in any given finite interval of time.

Thanks Lukky.........I'll remember............555-BODY............;) :p

Discretion is sometimes the better part of valor.....

Interesting question. I have to admit that there are some "hot" topics I just shy away from unless I have strong feelings about or have personal experience in that I feel can be shared constructively. Some things tend to rapidly become very emotional and I would rather steer clear from those as invariably someones feelings come to the surface and get stepped on. I try to be delicate and tactful where appropriate and if someone takes a shot at me, well, I usually just let it slide as it is not worth wasting everyone's time with another useless, snide remark.

I sometimes will try to, in my own inept way, insert a little humor which eludes some of us (even ME sometimes when I read it back later!)

Yes, I think I'm being considerate and respective in my posts and hope most of you think so as well.

(Damn! That sounded good! Someone call the Pope. I'm ready for my saint hood now me thinks!) :D

Phantom.

Okay, you guys are starting to SCARE old Phanty here! :D

So, this is YOUR shovel I found! :D

I have a Mantra

I use this mantra when I'm in one of these discussions, and it's pretty simple:

"It's not personal."

The things I say in a political or religious discussion aren't designed to affront or insult anyone. You believe what you believe and I believe what I believe. I may think you're wrong, or wrong-headed about something, but that doesn't mean I don't respect you anyhow. In fact, one of my friends is perhaps the diametric opposite to me in political beliefs, and our freindship is very strong regardless of how heated our discussions become.

But there's a second rule.

"If you get personally offended, walk away."

I use this one a lot, too. If I get offended, I'm going to get mad. If I think the other person's trying to merely offend me, I'll get mad and just walk away fron it.

Other than that, I'll discuss until I think there's no more enjoyment in it...or until I believe that I have no real chance of giving the other person something new about which to think.

As of this date i have not been called a fool as a result of an opinion i have expressed here on the boards. I think I do pretty well accepting others opinions and take them for just that. I learned a long time ago that if i have made up my mind or come to peace on an issue in my heart and mind no amount of wind will change that.

I think maybe my ego is strong enough to allow for others to have the opposite view on a subject than i hold. As long as we all know they are wrong everything is ok with me. :D :p

nobody has ever offended me on here , although they might think they have
i believe in the right of free speech and defend others rights to do so as well
everybody is entitled to their opinion even if it differs with mine [we all know i am always right]
i can normally tell what somebody is going to say before i read their reply to any particular post
the one thing that does annoy me even more than the trolls [cowardly shits] are the sycophantic arse kissers that always agree with their "friends" postings , no matter how absurd the argument is

I beat the crap out of them with my umbrella and yell, "I AM OFFENDED!!!"

No... wait a minute. That was some old lady from a Non Sequitur comic strip. Silly me.

If the topic is hot button for me and I'm reacting to something someone else has posted, I try to give myself a few minutes to compose something I can look at later and live with. I know its too easy for me to get the bit between my teeth and go for blood, so it's better if I try to keep the flames damped down to a nice bed of embers. Of course, if they're being a total ass, then all bets are off, I can't resist. :D

I just try to post things that wont offened people ..I know just about everything i write is meaningless to people but for some reason they reply and i think that is cool...I just try to write things that i think might be a little fun to think about..and if for some reason someone disagrees with my post then who cares they have the right to ..:)

I hunt them down and kill them - that is what I have the shovel and lime in the trunk of my car for. ;)

Otherwise, if I find the topic and the post interesting, and I have something to say that hasn't already been said, or as well as I think I can say it, then I will play the game of debate.

If the person is trolling, or they make a "subject/discuss amongst yourselves" thread post, then I ignore it - usually. I don't want to be posting a soliloquy or preaching to the choir - I expect some intelligent debate.

If it comes out that I am engaging in a war of wits with someone who is unarmed, then I usually let the person make a fool themselves without my help.

I totally agree with you Pablito...you are so completely right

:p

if someone disagree's with me i try to make them see my point of view to see if they can at least see where im coming from

and then i accept it if they still disagree ... i must admit though sometimes i should just bite my lip and accept that they wont even see where im coming from either :)

what happens?

i shoot them!!!

i just LOVE living in Alaska! do you know how hard it is to find a body out there in the wild when the wild is most of the fucking state? don't even have to bury it, either! foraging animals just love a free meal!

Just remember, fifty percent of the time, fifty percent of the people will disagree with your point of view. The trick is to say what's on your mind, and let the ball roll. A lot of times, what gets us pissed is that we think someone has to win that point of view, or the arguement. I blow it off, as I say what I think, and you can think what you want. This is America.
I grew up with four other brothers, I've found the above philosophy works in all conversations! :D

I take a look at my sig line and consider it for a moment.

Then I decide that I am right.

I like a good shit flinging contest.

Did I say that? I mean carefully considered debate.
