what do you call them where you are?

Definitely a blessing. Watching the damn things aren't worth the loss of IQ pts.

I have not seen a single program since U.S. television went to the digital format, other than a few sporting events (belmont, US open highlights, etc...)

I do not miss it.

i bet you are closet english.

common is a good term for people who act, well like common rubbish.

common is also good for a horse that kicks out sideways when being groomed.

or a hound that bites or cringes. . .

it's a good term, most useful.

One can only wish there would be pictures.

using your IQ points to determine what you should watch, or will simply enjoy watching, means you don't catch teh stupids.

as for the stupids, if they pay their licence fees then they're as entitled to watch what i'd call crap and enjoy it as i am to watch what they'd call crap and do the same.

it won't lower or raise your IQ - just feed you stuff you then use your IQ level to think about.

Alternate view.

I don't need to watch Jerry Springer to feel better about myself. When you really think about it, it's a fairly 'classist' point of view.

What's even worse is that there is so little new of interest. My ex used to accuse me all the time of having seen the program before because I could provide the punch line to the set-up line. Not true, Of course her idea of "doing something together" was to watch TV. Crocodile Dundee was right, watch the "I Love Lucy" reruns and you've pretty much seen it all. Probably the reason that he 'reality' shows seem to be the rage these days, unfortunately those are staged as well. That's why they call it entertainment.

But here, at Lit, we're all participants. Facebook? Twitter? Cheap imitations of what's real. Schecky Greene vs Mort Sahl. One liners vs an entire story.

Even to bother to spend time considering the actions of 'family' (Still a great one worder LTR) is to immerse yourself in that world.

You only have so much time and so many brain cells, use them wisely

people who scream at each other in the street, spit in public, hurl insults instead of arguing the point, fuck indiscriminately, drink too much?

in most places people seem to have a derogatory term for people who are, in their eyes, the underclass. what is it where you are?

(first troll to say 'dolfs' gets a pat on the head)

Humanity.

If you don't see it in the street that doesn't mean it's not going on behind closed doors.

Try giving up television too. That reduces most peoples exposure by 80%.

blessing 99% of the time, curse when i'm lost at dinner parties for being ignorant of 99% of the conversation.

i should google some information on popular shows before going out with friends, just to avoid appearing a dinosaur
"Googling some information" will just make you appear a dinosaur who googled some information.

Best just say, "I have no idea what you're talking about."

What does broadcasting have to do with it?

or, worse still, like peasants!

Unfair to peasants.

Peasants knew their place and were polite to their local dignatories because it was in the peasant's interest to avoid a fight he/she would lose.

Being a peasant was not to be at the bottom of the heap. Villeins were lower still and they and their children were classed as property.

Peasants could own or lease land. They could rise to become yeomen. Villeins were effectively slaves. But the shortage of labour after the Black Death meant most villeins became peasants.

Not for nothing is the word "villain" derived from villein. As the lowest grade in society they could lie, steal, cheat and no one would think any worse of them than they did already.

The current UK 'villains' regarded as the lowest in society, feral and habitually criminal are travellers (not Romany), or Romanian gipsies in the UK. As with all sterotypes, it is unfair to most and prejudiced from the behaviour of a few.

We don't have people like that, except for the ones who drink too much. They're called "road hazards."

What does broadcasting have to do with it?

We won't pay for television - I have never paid a satellite or cable bill and most likely never will - so when the format went to digital we decided not to bother with upgrading the set or getting a converter or repairing the antenna. We simply dropped television from our lives and now only have a small set attached to the DVD player (obsolete also) to play movies.

We won't pay for television
in britland that means no tv at all. but those tv licencing nazis aren't eeeeevil, so i refuse to give them a penny. doing without tv makes me feel smug.
