Dash of this: Food news

What do you think is typical “girl food” and “guy food”? Maybe salads and steak, respectively?

Not even close, says Harry Balzer, vice president of the NPD Group research firm, who has looked at 30 years of data on what Americans eat.

“Every day, since 1976, we have asked 3,500 people if they have gone to a restaurant and what they ordered,” Balzer said.

The most common thing women order? French fries.

No kidding. Women order fries more often than any other food.

Here’s another surprise: The second-most-ordered food is burgers, followed by pizza. A main-dish salad comes in seventh.

For men, the most-ordered item is burgers, followed by French fries and pizza. A main-dish salad is No. 10.

Still, Balzer says men and women differ in some eating choices.

“Men want to eat the same thing over and over, but women will try new things. They’re more experimental. They like all those breads that men can’t pronounce, like ciabatta and focaccia.” (That’s cha-BATT-uh and fo-KAHTCH-ee-uh, fellas.)

Balzer says it’s not surprising that some of the fast-food chains promote double and triple burgers in ads aimed at men.

“Men figure if one is good, two’s a lot better. It’s why we have razors with five blades.”

Works for me.

We kept going to the same places over and over. I had to request special to go someplace new. ANYPLACE new. My treat. Please. I can't take it any more.

The SO and I are always looking for a new place to eat out. Of course when we do go to a new place she always orders the Shrimp.

TGIFridays... Jack Daniel's steak, with extra sauce, loaded baked potato, salad on the side with honey mustard dressing, extra breadsticks and cheese. Yummy.

I'm an omnivore, so I'll usually order something that suits me right then or that I know is perfect there. Sometimes there are things I can't imagine NOT having. Lamb at one place, calamari at another, a certain dessert somewhere else...then I go find a new specialty somewhere new.

There is this little Greek restaurant up the street from us which we frequent, we always get the Saganaki. Opa! :D

I am a red-meat eater - grrrrr - and if the steaks are good (read- choice or prime and never frozen - aged at least 20 days) then I order it blooooood rare. Squirtin me into the eye with blood.

Then I order a baked potatoe plain and dump the contents out into the blood and sop it all up.

Then I go home and get into my coffin and avoid garlic.

PS~ Mr. WOK finds my rare meat obsession revolting and will turn down a bite of juicy goodness just because the meat is still blue - PAH! Wimp!

The main thing that Washington Post article shows that most people eat burgers, fries and pizza, and that fast-food companies are doing great.

So basically, while the salad is a more common dish for men than women, junk food still grabs the top spot. Quelle surprise.

A student's wage limits the options, but back when I could afford it, and had lunch out every day, I made an effort not to order the same thing more than once a month.

Dripping red, or torched to ashes... as long as the meat is not green, I'm all for it.

What surprises me the most is that you call restaurants to places that take "french fries" as orders.
