IMO, loving him means that you do things for him that he wants you to do, not things to him that you want to do because you wish he'd do them for you. You punched the girl out because that's what you'd want him to do for you, not because he actually wanted you to do that. Pay attention to what he likes and dislikes. He sounds non-violent and capable, and you just let him know that you didn't think he was capable and competent by what you did. He's pissed. Apologize, show that you understand why he's pissed, move on.
Sidenote- Will any other guys share some more guy-code with us? I don't think guys are too terribly difficult to figure out, but I always like validation that my hunches are right, since in real life guys won't admit to even having a 'guy code'
