What constitutes a BDSM story?

Silly question, I know. I am working on my first story but I am not sure if it is "hard core" enough for your garden variety BDSM reader. First of all, there isn't any sex until chapter 11. Secondly, I'm not sure if my male Dominant character meets whatever standard mandated by "the community." Is there a standard?

I have been obsessing with this story for months and I want to get it right. The bottom line is that I don't want to piss anybody off by making assumptions.

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions?

im sure there will be a million different opinions from a million different people, but here is my take:

i see two different kinds of bdsm stories: soft and hard. in a soft bdsm story, the plot/conflict/problem is more mental. for example, spanking by hand might not be a "wild and crazy" act, but the story is well written if the girl is shy and blushing and feeling her resistance slip away as the first hits put her in her place. for a harder story, that the girl is spanked might not be a particular focus of the story--its that she is spanked THEN whipped with a cane, then made to go out on all fours into a crowded room of strangers.

which one is more arousing to read? it all depends on the writer's style and the reader's tastes. to me, having the subbie get 20 smacks with a belt isn't necessarily twice as arousing as 10 smacks.

Thanks! I hope to get more insight like this. As someone who has always had one foot in the lifestyle I feel that I have a good grasp of the give and take involved in D/s. I just don't want to make inaccurate or sweeping generalizations that may garner criticism from those who devote a larger percentage of their lives to it.

Like you stated above there are millions of different view points. I am pretty sure I have read a story that you would consider soft that was some of the hardest most mind blowing things. Feeling her resistance slip away while slow and gradual can be quite "hard."

i certainly agree with this idea... i was just putting general labels on things. i personally think that the body can take a lot if it must, but the mind is what's interesting.

Here is a link to one I wrote a while ago. The editors put in in BDSM rather than on EC where I wanted it. By some of the standards it is pretty mild. No whips or chains. It is mostly words and quite honestly is more controlled by by the player who would be considered the submissive.

The scores hung at about 4.49 for a few months until one vote dropped down to 4.47 before I turned voting off.

I do not think all BDSM stories have to be all rough and tough although there is noting is wrong with that ether, I actually like the feel of flogger in my hand and her bent over and ...

BDSM is a very large and encompassing area. After you decide if your story fits within BDSM, you are going to have to decide a category for it, if you intend to post it here. That might be a good place to start. If you had a plot in mind when you wrote it (I'm guessing you did?), check out some of the Lit stories in that category against yours. If you didn't have a plot in mind when you wrote the story, maybe you should find yourself an editor to help. This editor could also read the story to see what category fits.

I can't imagine there's a 'standard.' If your characters are interesting and come alive, but you're worried they don't fit their labels neatly, err on the side of "interesting and come alive," please! :)

A good bdsm story is like a good pass in sports, namely one that gets there. So a good story gets across to its readers
