Not 100% sure, but I think it may have to do with the residency programs. Some residencies are extremely competitive.

I know for pharmacy, any residency is difficult to get. Due to my overall GPA, I didn’t even qualify to apply to any pharmacy residency.

Not sure if physicians go through a similar process, but that may be why some choose odd specializations.

Exactly, I’m genuinely interested how people come to their career decisions.

I myself have the resume of a drifter or serial killer. But dedicating yourself to medical school for the purpose of spending every day of your life inspecting rectums and colons . . . that strikes me as an odd choice to make.
