What Are YOU Thinking? Continued 3

Sorry I missed this last night.

I’ve been making my own laundry detergent for years. I like the fact that there are no (or less?) toxins, harsh chemicals, and overpowering perfume scent. And of course it’s better for the environment. I also sorta get off on the whole DYI, kinda-sorta pioneer woman vibe I get from making it. ;) I make enough for about six months at a time.

I'd thought you mentioned doing so on the board, sometime in the distant past. I'm very much into reducing toxic load. Do you make a straight liquid laundry soap, or do you add a touch of natural detergent like Sal Suds?

I've yet to try either, primarily due to all the conflicting opinions on whether the natural soups result in buildup on clothes and washer.

Thanks! :cattail:

I make a powder. Lasts longer and takes up less room!

So a powder soap? You don't have any problems with the dreaded *not detergent* buildup?

Too many differing articles out there. I am so confused!

Not really. I have store bought detergent that I use once in a while to avoid that. But I don't like all the perfumes.

Grated soap doesn't dissolve well. You need to put it through the processor.

Ah. So and occasional detergent run deters the problem. Good to know.

By processor, you mean the food processor, correct?

(I can't imagine what else it would be, but seems prudent to ask. :p)

Yep. Food processor. Just watch when you open it up at the end. I got a nose full of powder the first time. Sneezed and coughed for an hour.

Wait for ems to chime in. I'm sure she's got better info. She's been doing it longer than I have.

Really appreciate the info. I've been making myself crazy with over-reading!

I'm trying to be more active without being too active. What's the balance?

Post when you want and worry less about “doing it right”
Some people will find something to complain about no matter what, but most are pretty awesome. You’ll find what works for you, just don’t let it take over your life

Yes! I make powder as well. I just grate the soap and I haven’t had any issues with it dissolving. I add white vinegar to the rinse cycle every so often to combat any build-up. I add essential oils to it sometimes too, but the scent ends up being pretty faint. The vinegar softens clothes as well, and cleans your washer.

Thanks Tink!

The balance is the part that is important. Some days I'm off here. Other days it is my distraction. On a rare day, the addiction.
