What Are You Thinking? Continued 2

Is that because music is about the listening, so you can sort of block out the 'person' much more than when you're watching an actor play a role? I'd say that composition and all the other things you mentioned are the tools of the trade of a musician, just as the actor has tools at their disposal to play a role convincingly. Do you 'empathise' with a musician when you're listening to their music? Perhaps that's a key to why tainted actors are more difficult to watch?

I think that is exactly it. How can I look at Cosby's face as 'America's Dad' in a rerun and not wonder if he raped an unconscious woman that day after work? We took him to heart - he was beloved, and he betrayed us.

Listening to 'Thriller' doesn't have that effect, but under the surface we all know it's there. That's why I'm tossed about it.

If some historian were to dig up dirt on Beethoven, does his body of work then need to disappear?

I agree with this 100%.

It really is different for actors.

Even though I never cared for Michael Jackson's music or for the person because I've always believed he was a pedophile.. same with R. Kelly. I believe that others should be able to enjoy it but they need to know about who he was as a person.

That's like my love of James Brown's music. He is one of my all time favorite musicians but I know that he was a horrible person who beat his wives and was violent with other people, screwed over his band and was just an overall bad person but I just love the music and his impact on music.

Agree or disagree, people will always believe what they want and their opinions can rarely be changed.

At least with R. Kelly, we may get the satisfaction of seeing him go to jail if found guilty. I believe Jackson should have been found guilty when he was alive. I only like a select few of his songs anyway, but it's the principle that's perplexing. Should his heirs not benefit from a legitimate body of work? Did they know about his degeneracy (I'm thinking they MUST have known something)?

Sexual abuse cases are undismissable, but how far down the ladder of un-political correctness do we take things?

I was talking with a friend about just this: My favorite band, Lynyrd Skynyrd had touted Confederate Colors for years - an identification mark of their Southern roots. Yet I'm sure that when they played with that flag as a backdrop on their concerts, they weren't espousing slavery. Sorry, but even with that lyric that makes me cringe: "In Birmingham they love the governor (George Wallace)" I'm not giving up listening to them.

People still followed R Kelly despite his association with marrying a 15 yr old girl. Parodies were made of him that he didn't care for and he sent henchmen over to threaten them, the ones he could reach. He did that with Dave Chappelle. The truth was out there in all our faces, but people liked his music so he acquired a narcissistic quality about himself because there was no reprimand.

Here I am looking at this ultimate collection of Michael Jackson's songs I purchased soon after his death. Rare songs, demos of music and original versions of some that was not played on the radio. I'm keeping it. But putting him on a pedestal? No. Who puts their child in a position to go places without more than one adult present? I don't care if you are a celebrity. It could be at camp. If I can't sneak up and make surprise visits to see how my child is, there's a problem. Again, who trusts a young kid in the presence of others OVERNIGHT with no other chaperone?

As far as Bill Cosby, why is he the only one being reprimanded? Look at Matt Lauer, Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and all the others? Why are they walking around free? You can't help but mention race too.

That's an excellent question: what the hell is going on with them and more - especially Weinstein? Prosecutors typically don't go to trial unless they feel they have an ironclad case, but with the avalanche of accusations against Weinstein, they can find nothing tangible?

And yes - who lets MJ keep a child for a month?

And why is Roman Polanski so revered? Hypocrites like Meryl Streep stood to applaud his Oscar win for The Pianist. Those Hollywood protections of their little darlings are way too slow to fall away.

People look at famous people when it comes to this issue, but don't look at history. They don't take away from George Washington's accomplishments, because he was a slave owner or other any other founding fathers. Odds are if you had a female slave, you raped them. It's all horrible and they should've been all punished accordingly, past offenders present offenders and future offenders.

Just saying atrocious actions should all be condemned, but do we just throw away any memory of their work. Do we pronounce them guilty, when they aren't here to defend themselves and the courts couldn't prove it. Do we dismiss the accomplishments of this country's founding fathers, for the evil they've committed.

Where do we draw the line?

That and they did offend little ones then too. It's just not acknowledged as much like in the Catholic Church. Not bashing, it happens everywhere it seems. That's just one place named. Even within the family structures of some.

If we erase all the accomplishments of famous people, do we erase the accomplishments of the Catholic Church and Founding Fathers. All I am saying, is where do we draw the line.

All of it is horrible and disgusting

That's the thing. Who is without sin? To what depth and level are we as a nation willing to live with? Even acknowledging our own sins and expectations of forgiveness.

Been following the MJ/ R. Kelly debate, and here's my take;

Can you love the art, and hate the artist? What if we found out Michelangelo was a serial killer? Or DaVinci was a rapist? What if the Beatles were a bunch of racist assholes? Would that diminish their works in total? Would we tear down the Sistine Chapel, the Mona Lisa, the White album? I think as rational human beings we can distinguish the man and their actions, and their body of work. Imagine growing up in the 80s-90s WITHOUT MJ's music....

Now R. Kelly just comes off as a spoiled baby, finally getting punished for shit that he's been proud of getting away with up til now. I think in 50 yrs, people will still remember him for peeing on that girl in Colorado, but not for his music...

The lyrics right after that were the reason Sweet Home Alabama did nor become the state song. In Birmingham they love the Gov'nor, boo-hoo-hoo
Now we all did what we could do

I do not think the band is in favor of slavery either. The Confederate flag just stayed a symbol for the States that fought for the south. Giving them some sort of identity, I think. That does NOT mean that many who wave that flag are NOT racists and bigots. Many are.

There are some typos in this that make it hilarious....:D

My thoughts exactly! Well said DS.

Oh I'm sure. I'm pretty certain he'll be going away for awhile but you never know how these things will go. Hopefully he will.

That is perplexing.. unless it was documented somehow, I doubt anyone would admit to knowing unless their conscience started to bother them. I agree that someone had to know..

There has to be a line somewhere and I'm sure there is one but I guess it's up to ourselves to gauge where it is.

I'm also a Lynyrd Skyrnyrd fan, living in the south it's hard not to be but I'm also against racism since it's something I've always had to see growing up and it disgusts me.. that being said, I don't think they meant it in a racial way. I like to think that lyric is musical parody. I've been lead to believe that it is.

Was a nice quiet relaxed Saturday until someone hit my car while it was parked in a parking lot.. Just another thing to put on the list of things to get done.

Some really cool people hang around here

(sorry that happened to you, Dom ... what a pain)

That happened to me last week. It's just a little bump over the front wheel well.. but what a pain

yep.. I admit I felt bad since it was a young girl and her friends (new licensee) but cracked my bumper which is all one piece so it could be a few thousand and will need insurance. Waited for the mom to show up and tried to be as polite and friendly as possible so as to keep her calm until her mother arrived... no one was hurt so will be fine.

Someone, somewhere, at some point has probably idly fantasized about being in a relationship with you.

I'm thinking it's a Credence or ELO kind of day.

I guess your right indie. Still makes me sad though.

If someone cares, they will make time for you. When you realise you're not important to a person, stop making them a priority.

I know I've been busy and a lousy friend lately, but I hope I've still been able to show the people I hold closest that I care about them.

You have a ton going on right now. Definitely not a lousy friend. 🌷
