What Are You Thinking? Continued 2

I think I get too easily invested in new things/people. It's a side effect of being depressed, I think. Whenever I'm feeling good I grab on to whatever I can in the hope that it'll be the thing/person that will keep me from ending up back in the darkness. So far, nothing ever has been. :cathappy:

I feel your pain, dear. :(

I know the feeling

I'm tossed up about the whole Michael Jackson thing. The BBC has banned all of his music, and many radio outlets are following suit, much as they are doing with R. Kelly.

I think child molesters and sexual predators of all types should burn in the hottest fires of Hell. Period.

The tough part is: Do we erase all of the music/movies/literature etc of merit because of reprehensible acts committed by the artist? Are we never going to hear Beat It or Billy Jean on the radio again, and if you were to play it at a party would you risk vilification?

I know this probably belongs on the GB, but it's what I'm thinking (and the people on the GB tend to be SO fucking nasty).

Just adding to the thoughts, since this was in a discussion I had last night:

Does the good outweigh the bad? I don't want to be the one influencing another generation to think MJ was "cool". I don't want them downloading/buying the music and his estate profiting from that.

I love Bill Cosby. I love the things he produced, especially "Little Bill". But, he did some reprehensible things.

It's hard to know where to draw the line.

That's a really interesting topic ^^^

I feel the same about Kevin Spacey. Ikve really enjoyed lots of his films, and I loved that he committed ten years to the Old Vic theatre in London (which really needed it) and he stuck to it. I saw him on the stage several times and he was incredible. But I can't think back to those films or those evenings now without the shadow of what he has or hasn't done, and his responses to the allegations.

Does the work stand on its own? Can it? Should it? I don't know. I think that I think we can't separate the work and the person. That the work is tainted by the person, if the crimes were committed. But, but...

What a difficult question.

That was the conclusion we came to last night. The actions have coloured things in such a way that we can't separate the two. Others may be able to do so, but then the question comes back...should we?

A better question might be what are you having for breakfast, Numi...and will you share? :rose:

I think it's different for actors, where we need to somewhat buy into their humanity to enjoy seeing them acting a role on our TV or movie screens - they are right there, talking, bringing us into the story. I couldn't watch a Christian Slater movie for a long time after he had been arrested for domestic violence, simply because I couldn't empathize with him or whatever character he was playing.

It's impossible for me to watch Bill Cosby in anything anymore, because his whole persona is false. Yes, actors only play a role, but who can believe in Dr. Huxtable now?

Music is different to me. With great songs, it's hard to not want to hear them anyway. They're more about the composition, arrangement, melody, harmony and musicianship than they are about the person singing them.

Is that because music is about the listening, so you can sort of block out the 'person' much more than when you're watching an actor play a role? I'd say that composition and all the other things you mentioned are the tools of the trade of a musician, just as the actor has tools at their disposal to play a role convincingly. Do you 'empathise' with a musician when you're listening to their music? Perhaps that's a key to why tainted actors are more difficult to watch?

It's dinner time here, I've just had paella, yum :)

Breakfast will be Greek(-ish) yoghurt with honey and nuts. And of course you can share...

There are people who have beautiful talents, creating works of art in their field, but have done terrible things. I think we can appreciate their talents and works of art, but be disgusted by their actions or what we believe they are guilty of. I think we can separate one from the other, if you're open minded and don't see things purely black & white

I don't care what talent they have, if they are sex offenders... especially towards children, let them burn.

I don't think MJ did it, but if they did it, of course they deserve to be punished brutally. What I am saying is some of their music are still beautiful, despite their reprehensible actions. We shouldn't make them richer or support them, but can't deny their professional work

If they are guilty, fuck them and their work.

NJ has a Politician in Office that was Sleeping with underage children in different countries, that the C.I.A. helped bring to him and people still voted this dude in knowing this and he's still in Office. So some people don't care at all, I get it, if they're guilty fuck them. Ben Rothlesberger was accused of rape and many still buy his Jersey and support his team. I believe R. Kelly is guilty, but for some reason I don't believe Michael Jackson did it

I didn't vote for him, I didn't buy his Jersey, I don't listen to R. Kelly, as for MJ, it looks suspect to me.
It's how I feel, nobody has to agree.

This is, quite possibly, the noisiest hotel room I've ever been in...

How in the hell can I be 50??? It seems like just yesterday I was in my 20's. Where does the time go?:eek::eek:

I agree with this 100%.

It really is different for actors.

Even though I never cared for Michael Jackson's music or for the person because I've always believed he was a pedophile.. same with R. Kelly. I believe that others should be able to enjoy it but they need to know about who he was as a person.

That's like my love of James Brown's music. He is one of my all time favorite musicians but I know that he was a horrible person who beat his wives and was violent with other people, screwed over his band and was just an overall bad person but I just love the music and his impact on music.

Agree or disagree, people will always believe what they want and their opinions can rarely be changed.

I understand exactly where you are coming from, I am sorry you are in that place, It's not a good place to be.

I hate the darkness, I hate depression, I hate the treatment and the drugs.
