Is "trying your best" really achievable or is it something we tell ourselves when we settle for an outcome?

For the first time in over 20 yrs I looked up in to night sky to look for stars and realized I dont know whether to make my usual wish on the first star I see, luckily it is too overcast, so I don’t have to decide tonight. It feels weird.

Trying one’s best is all anyone can do, the act itself is achievable, but that’s different than the actual outcome. It’s not something you decide after the outcome but before the trying.

It's something I've been struggling with. Can you "try your best" but when reflecting on the outcome say you could have done better or could have done something different to achieve a better outcome?

I figure I did my best with the information and resources I had available at the time. I also in hindsight resolve to do better next time.
