I think you're right, Cheyenne. It's definitely not a Southern Baptist thing, so i don't have to worry about giving up anything for Lent.

yes m'am. I think I heard once before that there were one or 2 other religions that did it. But Catholics are the strictest. I know a lot of Catholics that follow in different ways though.

Some abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and every Friday until Easter. And I've known some families to not eat meat at all during Lent. Now when I say no meat that doesnt mean you cant have seafood.

I grew up United Methodist, and we always gave up something for Lent. I haven't done it in recent years, but this year, I'm giving up smoking. I already gave it up almost two weeks ago, but maybe this way, I won't start back. But, back on topic, no, I don't think it's just a Catholic thing.

Correct. BUT some Catholics believe in no seafood either.

Tonight we are going out for pancakes...tomorrow we will have pasta with a meatless sauce...or fish....and then the same every Friday til Easter Sunday.

My youngest two have given up:

My daughter...being rotten to her siblings...

Easter is 40 days after Mardi Gras ends, the first day being Ash Wednesday.

Er, nothing, since I'm not practicing, but when we were kids, we were required to give OF ourselves. My mother thought just "giving up" something was not a way to spiritually enrich ourselves, so we had to do something for our own betterment or the betterment of others.

Also no meat on Fridays.

15 years ago I gave up the idea that denying myself chocolate for a few weeks would get me into heaven.

Lent's been a breeze since then.

A few years ago I gave up meatless Lenten Fridays. Not having a hamburger one day out of the week is not a sacrifice that will get you any closer to Christ.

What an excellent synecdoche for the relationship between Catholicism and Episcopalianism.

I don't give up anything for Lent. It's one of the perks of being a heretic.

Not Catholic, so that isn't a problem for me.

As for the posts here that mention giving something up won't get you closer to heaven/God/Christ.....I understand what you are saying, but that isn't what giving something up for Lent is about, is it? I thought it was more about the sacrifice.

Of course, this ol' church of Christ gal don't really understand a lot of Catholic stuff. So what else is new.
