What’s your song?

“Beste Zangers” (literally “Best Singers”) is a popular Dutch TV show where well-known artists take turns performing emotional, creative cover versions of each other’s songs. Each episode focuses on one singer, whose life and career are explored through these performances. It’s less a competition and more a celebration of music, emotion, and connection, often leading to powerful, heartfelt moments on stage.

That’s exactly what makes Beste Zangers so special. Glenn Faria wrote Duurt te lang as a subdued, almost resigned song about loss and exhaustion, a version that gets under your skin because of its calm honesty. Davina Michelle completely turned that around; she sings it with such raw intensity that the song stops being about acceptance and becomes about fighting, about refusing to give up. The same lyrics, yet two entirely different truths, and that is the magic of music: it can carry the same words but touch a completely different heart each time.

That was awesome. Really enjoyed her version. Wish I hadn’t forgotten all my Dutch. 60 years ago I could have understood it better. I’m glad hers had the lyrics.
voortreffelijk
