We've had the music, but now WHAT makes you nervous?

I found SC's thread on music to combat nervousness, quite revealing.

It wasn't until I read Lucky's post that she 'rarely gets nervous', that it made me think.

So here's the question.........:

WHAT MAKES YOU NERVOUS??

Me:

Nervousness is, and has been, the bane of my life.....not so bad now, but in past lives, it has reduced me to a physical wreck.........requiring quick access to a bathroom for constant peeing, and/or a bucket to cope with stomach contractions. My first ever job interview at 18 had me retching in the gutter outside the building, as did my first driving test at the age of 20. (sorry for the graphic). My list:

~Interviews

~Meetings with unknown people (on my own) (be warned Perdy and others, when we meet in January.....I'll be excited, but very very nervous, especially after the drive into unknown territory - furtherest north I've been in the UK, I have driven to Manchester, so the distance isn't new, just the area.)

~Driving test

~Social gatherings mostly, where I know I'll say and do lots of stupid things, talk way too much (even more than here)

~Dentist appointments simply terrify me....never sure how I get through those, I pace the floor for hours before an appointment.

~In my adult life, examinations - strange how that came back, they never bothered me at school, but in the 7 years I spent studying for my degree, every end of module/year examination reduced me to a quivering wreck.

~Hospital appointments - I have a very very low physical pain tolerance level (I can't help it people, but I do acknowledge it), and the anticipation of being hurt in any way.......*shudder*

~My first ever aeroplane flight in 1990. I had to be propelled onto the plane by two fellow travellers in my party, before I turned tail and ran. Now I love it, providing its calm and uneventful. I can manage without the turbulence thank you.

And having read that, hell, do I sound pathetic.

:(

Nervous? Not much really with this one vivid exception:

2 gorgeous women grilling me during a job interview. I could not think of anything but sex, and that made me tongue tied. lol

(unfortunately too true)

Oh - edited to add: driving. Specifically burgundy or gray cars. I have a fear of car accidents, and maggots.

I am sure there is more - but I doubt I want to think about it.

Tough question.

With me it depends, I suppose, on the frame of mind I'm in. The only time that comes to mind was when I flew to Europe completely by myself, knowing that I couldn't speak the language of the country I was going to - that was sort of scary.

I used to be nervous in social situations, but I've worked through it. Calling people on the phone used to give me heart palpitations, but I've gotten past that too.

If I overthink it, going on a long car trip by myself makes me a bit nervous. Close friends or family members going on long trips make me nervous because I imagine too many bad things.

The thought of failing at something ties my stomach in knots.

And sometimes, I get anxious for no reason at all and it takes me days to calm down.

Nice to know I'm not the only one. Thanks, Mat:heart:

Exactly how I felt, first time I visited the States........

Public speaking/performing -- a la stage fright. Often, even something as benign as chairing a meeting will have my nerves frayed.

With me, it's 'courtly' situations.

Business meetings, meetings with superiors in power hierarchies, dealing with bureaucracies.

Those places that live by complex rules only vaguely related to ability and accomplishment.

As a simple minded and easily bored person, I always fuck up in these situations. So I get nearly comatose with fear when I have to deal with them.

I forgot that one, that's a big one for me. I'm okay one-on-one but when I have to get in front of a group ... no matter how supportive ... I almost pass out.

*laughing*..........sorry, that was wicked of me, but I just couldn't resist it.

My unreserved apologies to all you lovely people who live in the part of the world previously known as 'The Colonies'.

Once in college, I was working two jobs, taking eighteen credit hours of classes, and taking time for at least one extracurricular club. I worked it out to see how busy I was, because someone I knew said that despite how overworked and stressed I felt, "you always have more free time than you think."

Factoring in weekends, I figured I had "one hour" per day that was free, and that was it. (During the week, I actually had no time free, and felt I was running all the time.) I was having nightmares every night and crying over the smallest stresses. Once I figured out how little free time I actually had, I dropped one class and one job, and then I was much happier.

I had two nervous breakdowns in the same day once during the time my husband was thinking of leaving me, too. The first was my fault, the second was my employer's. It was quite frightening.

Hey ... :: pretends to pout, her lower lip quivering, trying to keep in her laughter::

That's making me nervous! :D

Nervous?

Rejection from a valued source.

Music is little help. Singing blues excepted, but i have to be the one singing.

Awww.... (pet, pet.)

Anyway I was talking about the snooty brits, not you.

Social situations. Mostly if I don't know many/any of the people there.

Anything else that makes me nervous is only a very temporary thing that ends as soon as I start (like giving a presentation).

Heights....Ladders, ledges, towers, roofs...I can do it, but I don't have to like it.
