In work I'm kind of an anachronism. I don't join in the petty office politics nor do I join in the cronyism. I also don't believe in sugar coating things. If I think someone is wrong then I let them know this. (Including the Boss.) Sometimes I do this diplomaticaly but usually I just tell it like it is.

Then yesterday I was informed by the boss that I had been chosen to take a class tomorrow. This class is a four hour class on how to interview prospective employees.

What's interesting about this is I was chosen out of 30 other Nurses, (R.N.'s and Aides) including the Charge Nurses and the Assistant Manager.

I wonder why I was chosen. I'm sure it isn't because of my endearing personality and it certainly isn't because of my diplomacy.

Ahh well, who knows and maybe I'll find out some day. In the mean time the class should at least be interesting.

I'm guessin' you were chosen to attend this class because you're not a mealy-mouthed weenie, a brown noser or a bullshit artist. Interviewing prospective employees is the time to ask the hard questions and weed out the potential failures and troublemakers. Methinks you would be good at that. ;)

Or, the boss figures "anything to get this guy off the floor for a few hours". Either way, good job, congratulations.

When I worked for the state I often got picked for teevee interviews; I dont think I was picked cuz of my laconic, sweet comments; I suspect they were hoping I'd call the governor a mother-fucker so they could fire me.

You imply that it's a reward. Maybe the boss is favoring the diplomatic and those who are nice to her by not making them take a boring, 4-hour workshop and then spend extra work time interviewing new hires. Or maybe the boss figures that he new hires you make will be win-win for her. If they work out, she can take credit for putting you in charge of that, if they mess up, she can point the finger at you ("he hired them!").

Is there some reason to view this as a reward? Will there be a good deal more money involved as well as all this extra work?

Well this is interesting indeed.

Four others from my unit were in this class. (The others were R.N.'s.) We will be working as a team in the interview process and follow a fairly strict set of guidlines. We will rate the person individually and then as a group. Only then will our recomendations go back to the Boss who will have already interviewed the person.

The reasons we were chosen are because we work on the floor and have knowledge of what truly goes on and what we need for new people. All four of us are known for doing what needs to be done to take care of our patients, all four of us are known for standing up for our patients and all four of us are known for standing up against what we consider to be B.S.

Is this a reward? In some ways yes and in some ways no. It means a lot more work for us but it also means a bit more green in our checks. (Not to mention it will allow us to have a say in who does get hired, which means we get to try and weed out the non-workers before they hit the floor.)
