it's a made my computer into a dream machine.

What a difference!

I've also installed ZoneAlarm fire wall (the free version) and even watching the number of attacks I'm under is entertaining...

Thanks for all the advice everybody.

...and here's me making a humble attempt at being grateful...

I have DSL, I love it. I do have Norton antivirus, should I instal some sort of other firewall?

Warning!

Watch out for those 100MB porn video clips that take all of about 40 seconds to download.

Kasha

Norton Anti V. is not a firewall and doesn't protect you from hackers. Go to download.com and get Zone Alarm - it's free and easy to use. Just don't get upset when you see how often someone tries to access your PC.

Hey Miles

Hey, Miles...........

I have dsl and anti, and firewalls.................I noticed that I get several attemts aweek on my system...............What with that?.........It that someone try to plant a bug or get my info? Are they just playing around to see if they can get in?.......Any clue what the deal is?

Wizard

I don't know how many are attempts to crack your system, but it doesn' t matter. You are keeping them out. Nobody has a right to access your PC.

i've got dsl too had it awhile

now i can beat you at counter-strike p_p_man :p

Both you guys play CS??? Cool if you do. I don't play CS much because my comp is a little too slow to handle it, but I do play lots of regular and Teamplay HL death match. We should try and organize a game sometime.

checking in from the boonies

I dream about DSL... fantasize about a cable connection... hell, i'd settle for a 56K dial up!

As it is, i have to settle for a connection much like using carrier pigeons to transfer information. The joys of rural life. :p

i've no idea if p_p_man plays it i was just teasing :) but i use too play it quite a bit i was pretty good at it too

I have cable and get 20 to 100 hits a day, so afew a week is OK

Don

I have one of those high-speed internet connection thingamajigs...you know...the kind where you can download songs in -4 seconds. LOL

Don't ask me to get all technical, because I can't.

I downloaded ZoneAlarm a few days ago, but nothing's really happened. I sure do get alot of pop-up windows from it, though.

I was just curious...What programs do you all run that your computer gets attacked?

Good luck deciphering that.;)

;)

I'm new to all this as well but unless ZoneAlarm is asking you whether you want one of your programs, like Synchronization, to access the internet then all the other pop-up windows are alerts where ZL is telling you it has blocked access to your computer from an unknown outside source.

Doesn't have to be a virus. It could be a "ping" from your ISP checking things are OK with the connection, or a commercial site listing your address.

I haven't configured it all myself yet but you have to tell ZL which contacts you want to let through and which you don't.

I've just decided to play safe for the moment and block everything until I know what the hell I'm doing!

:D

I was with ya...right up til the second line. LOL

Sounds like you're a little better off than me. Good luck figuring it out:)

:)

Wondering................

I am not worried about it............They are getting blocked ....I just wondered it it was folks playing around or someone trying to plan a virus......

What is the diffrence with Broadband? Is your speed quicker ?....How about these T1 and T3 lines I hear about?....I really don't know what they are either.........Anything good about them?....A big cost diffrence?.....

Anyone?

what you dont realize unless you have zone alarm installed is the amount of "pings" you can collect as you browse the web ... websites you visit will sometimes ping you back ... different programs you use will send information via the net ... real player does this even when your not using it

most of the time all of this is nothing to worry about and its perfectly fine ... zone alarm blocks ALL internet traffic apart from the parts you authorize its very useful but dont panic too much if you are getting weird reports from it it doesnt mean someone is trying to hack you

T1/T3 lines are permanent connections to the net they arent recommended for home use because of the cost ... if you want perm connection to the net from home go for cable or adsl depending on which companies are in your area ... its A LOT faster and you can do all sorts of cool things because your connected permanently setup email notification and stuff like that

Welcome to the wonderful world of broadband ppman. I love it.

I use Zonealarm also and it is great...........

T1/T3 connections are usually cost prohibitive to the normal home users. Cable or DSL is usually more economical and does what we need it to. Though a friend of mine has a T1 and damnnnnnn it is fast. But then again he has 2 servers at home he does for fun and extra $$$$.

OK, Thanks sexy-girl & Chuckus

I was wondering about that .......Now are the T1 and T3 considered Broadband?...................

I do have Dsl and Like it way better than Dial up ....Just wondering if there was anything better for close or around the same price...we have both cable and Dsl in our area...........

Sure T1 and T3 are broadband. The only difference I know of between cable and dsl is speed upload and download. Dsl is somewhat limited in speed by "how close you are to the service provider" or something along those lines.........either one you cannot go to wrong. I love my cable modem.......though now I notice "lag" cause I am used to it and notice it. I detested lag with dial up..........arrrggghhhhhh

DSL and Cable are close in price..........I use RoadRunner and it runs me about $39.95/month.

Cool.............Understood....Yep I pay 39.95 a month for Dsl and cable is real real close to the same........
I know when I switched over I was paying about 20 a month for dial up (17.95 or something like that) and another 20 for a second phone line so I couldn't go wrong this way......Same money out of pocket.......
I have Verizon ......When I got it it was great but now more have jumped on the boat and it has gotten I bit slower or like you I have gotten used to it....

Thanks for the info.........
