"U.N.'s Surveillance Equipment Is Shut Down at Nuclear Plant
By REUTERS

SEOUL, South Korea, Sunday, Dec. 22 (Reuters)

North Korea said today it had begun removing United Nations monitoring equipment from a nuclear reactor at the center of its suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons.

The announcement came after the International Atomic Energy Agency said in Vienna on Saturday that the North disabled surveillance devices the agency, an arm of the United Nations, had placed at the 5-megawatt Yongbyon research reactor, which the United Nations believes was used to make plutonium capable of use in nuclear warheads.
