Calif. Fast Food Companies Cut 18K Jobs After Minimum-Wage Hike.

California raised the minimum wage statewide for “fast food restaurant employees” to $20 per hour last April following the passage of a ballot proposition in September the year before.
Analysis of unadjusted data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, the NBER found “that employment in California’s fast food sector declined by 2.7 percent relative to employment in the fast food sector elsewhere in the United States from September 2023 through September 2024 … Our median estimate translates into a loss of 18,000 jobs in California’s fast food sector relative to the counterfactual.”
The fast food sector has also cut workers’ hour and increased automation to avoid paying rising employment costs.
And here’s an oldie but a goodie from the experts: California’s $20 Fast-Food Minimum Wage Is a Win-Win-Win, Research Says.

It ain't exactly news that big business will choose greed over workers' interests every time.

We TOLD YOU so. That you insisted we were wrong is what separates smart people from idiots like yourself.

Funny how they didn't cut the jobs for years after raising the minimum wage. This couldn't be a completely unrelated series of layoffs due to the economy being shit and people not having enough money to even buy hamburgers, could it? Economically illiterate right-wing nut jobs wouldn't shoehorn such a thing into the version of the world that exists only in their own minds, would they? Nah---

Lol, California passed the fast food workers wage law and IMMEDIATELY saw layoffs and cut hours. It wasn't years later, it was IMMEDIATE.

I get a very strong feeling that you don't live in and have never spent significant amounts of time in California. They did the neoliberal thing of staggering the wage increase so inflation would basically negate the positive impacts for the worker. There were no major, immediate layoffs whenever the wage went up.

The entire Western economic system is failing right now. Germany is basically being deindustrialized. It's why we're desperate to start a global war with the rest of the world it's a desperate plot to delay the inevitable

Several sectors of the workforce are facing massive layoffs right now. Are the tech bros looking for jobs because of the measly minimum wage increases over the last decade? I don't think so.
