I thought they'd cancelled the Zumwalt program outright...I was wrong.

They downsized it from 32 ships to only 3 ships.

Enormous cost overruns, of course.

This ship was designed to replace the old Burke class destroyers, and featured two upgrades: a radar/sonar resistant profile, and an absolutely YUUUGE powerplant (10 times larger than Burke destroyers) that allowed for laser weaponry (railguns).

Looks like the ship was designed by committee and tried to be all things to everyone (not unlike that poxy Joint Tactical Fighter plane). Major late design concession was downgrading the swarm defense capabilities, the old standard was the ability to engage multiple fast attack ships at two miles....now it's been dumbed-down to one mile, within RPG (rocket propelled grenade) range.
