Most major manufacturer ammo in .40 is less than 1100fpm. OTOH, most 115gr 9mm is spot on at around 1150fpm (+/-).

IMO, .40 fills the gap between 9mm and .45 by taking the worst traits of both and combining them. Judging by the popularity of the caliber, that's not a view which many share. Of course most of those who hold that view also think Glock is a great gun and that 1911's aren't the lead dogs.

Most law enforcement agencies are transitioning back to 9mm. Cost is the primary reason I have been told but in reality who knows.

The nice thing about the 9 is not having to reload. The downside is having to empty the magazine.
I'm a .45acp guy myself. I am not Wyatt Earp and my self defense plans do not include engaging in a running gun battle where I need 15, 20, 30 rounds. If I shoot it will be enough to get my loved ones to safety and me after them.

40 runs the gamut from 1100 to mid 1200's. I like the 40, it's a flat shooting cartridge for a pistol.

I often wondered if the best first 2 shots wouldn't be right in the crotch. If a guy keeps coming at me after that then I'm a big fan of the machine gunner theory, even though I would have to reload!
Good idea if too close and have to engage from retention or if they have plates on.

I'm a fan of my SIGs. I've thought about a 220 but haven't decided to pull the trigger on one yet.

Triggered . . . .
Our family has converted. Got plenty of Glocks but no longer carry "the AK of the pistol world". P365xl with a Wilson Combat lower fits all but the bikini gun/banana hammock concealment role. Gen 5 Glocks made me realize they are never changing, evolving, or innovating. Time to look elsewhere.

You have a point on the Glocks. I've never handled a 365. Maybe I need to go to a range and rent one.

Pelvis. It's covered in a network of blood vessels and there's no possibility of compression to stop the bleeding.

Cost is probably a huge factor but the reality is that the 9mm is just more user friendly.

I tell people that if I had a combat ready 1911 in 9mm and someone to feed me new magazines, I could conquer the world because it's that capable and user friendly. Little to no felt recoil, fast followup, hard hitting, more rounds in same package, light and easy to maneuver with a full mag inserted, it's almost perfect.

Perfect would be a Klingon disruptor but until I can get my hands on one of those, I'm a 9mm fan.

Considering the fire control group is the only serialized part of the Sig family (320 and 365), you can select grips from p365xl, p365, p365 XMacro, the new Fuse, and so on, till you find a size that fits you.

And they make some lurvely hollow-points with lots of extra nastiness that peel like a banana.

The bullet builders, not the Klingons.

.357 sig. 1400 fps & 600ftlbs energy. It's faster, harder hitting, with more loaded capacity in a std mag than the .40.

It's a lot more expensive too but what's your life worth?

Cost, capacity, and newer bullet designs. FBI was the biggie. Cost and the fact thier shootings required 3-5 rounds to score 1 hit. So if the damage done by 9mm, 40, and 45 are damn near identical, the average FBI agent needs more rounds in the mag to score hits. 9mm becomes thier logical choice. That and the contract for the 135 Grain +p Critical Duty.

Now I'm curious. Not really in the market, per se, for another handgun just yet, and the next one I had kinda decided on is a 1911 in 10mm. I'll take a look at a 365 for later.

Well, I've got my everyday carry and a backup so I'm not exactly shopping. And before I ever considered getting a .357 Sig. I'll be buying a 38 Super.

Same basic ballistics as .40 S&W. Maybe a bit hotter, but same ol', same ol'.

1250fps, 425ftlbs energy.

.357 Sig in a 7" long barrel extended dust cover frame 1911 is heavy and hard to conceal, but it also has manageable recoil for most SD work. Plus it's bad ass when people realize that what you're packing is a LOT bigger than what they have in their pants.

As they say, size matters.

Dan Wesson makes some beauts. Ammo becomes the problem with 10mm. Most of the commercially made stuff with the exception of companies like Underwood load it to 40 S&W pressures. Fuck that. It is 1 of a trio of pistol rounds I handload.

For that round, I can see the point in that. I did check the ballistics on the last I bought and it did have some more ass than a 40. I'll look closer.
