Life has no purpose. A thing that is finite cannot have a purpose. Purpose is like paint on a cement wall. It is an intellectualization. It is a forced adornment. You live. And you will die. What purpose is there in that? Then why do anything at all? To pass the time in a beautiful way.

Life is the purpose.

Chasing pleasure brings pleasure. But it does not bring satisfaction. In fact, it is precisely because it does not bring satisfaction that one must keep chasing it.

If it were so fucking important . . . .

Does anyone else notice how gun laws are only a priority of the American Left in the aftermath of an egregious shooting? It sounds a bit opportunist to me because, I know from one experience with the issues now, once the cameras and pop-culture reporters go away and the metaphorical bleeding stops, the issue falls way back down in the political issues hierarchy of what’s important in the Left’s drive to eradicate inequality as well as the individual. If falls down there below border control (which encompasses arms, drug and human smuggling, top election issues, but outside of that window, too toxic to touch: it’s Hammer time! You can’t touch this!)

You say you want want “common-sense gun laws” whether it’s (just like the abortion issue) from, "We just need a few more laws (boil the frog slowly)," to an outright firearms ban (let the Hammer drop!)? Then stop making it an issue of opportunity and make it a real, top priority in the social justice hierarchy of needs. Make you politicians know that they have to run on this issue, not just give it lip service from one unfortunate event to another. Threaten to support the gun guy with your contributions and votes; at least they’re being honest and dedicated to their values!

Hiding behind a paywall, but interesting nonetheless:

Federal Appeals Court Finds Prohibition on Medical Marijuana Users Owning Firearms Violates the Second Amendment

‘The Second Amendment does not permit the federal government to categorically deem all medical marijuana patients to be too dangerous to exercise their core constitutional rights,’ a lawyer for the plaintiffs says.

That's another one of those decisions where the court decided the outcome first, then wrote the opinion to support their preordained result.

Basically, this decision is stupid. It's like saying laws against public drunkenness violate Constitutional Rights to free travel. Constitutional Rights end where the individual becomes a danger to either themselves or others when exercising their rights. Being addicted to an illegal substance and not being allowed to play with guns is a no brainer. Unless you're one of the addicted.

I will not go so far as to say marijuana is harmless, but I have never watched anybody get smoked up and go tear up a bar or saloon or other. I was kind of wondering when I saw the decision if, maybe, it might open the conversation towards legalising Marijuana nationally. I think that would make sense.

I am also inclined to believe that marijuana is no more addicting than any other substance which will affect you psychologically. It certainly isn’t like shooting heroin.

I don’t know. They’ll issue us our marching orders soon enough.

The problem is that there are multiple studies that say otherwise beginning in the 1970's and as recently as within the last decade or so. Worse, today's pot is a lot stronger than the old stuff, is more addicting, and carries with it irreversible mental illness in the form of paranoia and delusions.

It's not harmless like most people think. It's not even moderately bad for you like alcohol. The shit is literally poison that fucks up your brain forever even if you quit. The biggest obstacle to sorting the issue out is that most people imbibe and think that because it doesn't make them go nutso, then it's fine. It's harmless. Just a relaxant.

Yet just look at the messed up social issues of today in a world where most people use pot regularly and ask yourself if there's a connection. Those who use pot will say no. Those who know how bad it is either give up, because you can't take on the entire world by yourself, or post their opinions online to a readership that mostly supports the dangerous use of it.

I'm no proof of the long term effects you suspect. However, I made much better decisions after I no longer smoked the stuff.

Which is proof of a sort that it's not harmless as most people believe.

The information as to the effect is out there, all you have to do is search for it and read what you find. The picture isn't going to be what you expect. Much like the narrative that surrounds gender disphoria and transgenderism, the conversation is filled with ideology and faith and dogma by those who refuse to accept that what they're advocating/doing is bad.

Yet "teh science" says otherwise.

The behavioral problems associated with the use of strong forms of cannabis are likely caused by methylation of DNA, which has epigenetic effects (turning on or shutting off the expression of certain genes). These behavioral problems can include psychosis, and epigenetic effects can be intergenerational.
