I realize that today is technically called Presidents' Day and is intended to celebrate the births of Washington and Lincoln specifically and others, even Harding, by extension. Even so, I think of it as Washington's birthday, which brings up some interesting contradictions.

I respect him as "The Father of Our Country", moreso than any one person. Others, however, view him as a slaveowner, which he was, and some of our AH members in England may think of him as a great traitor. They might deny it now but if he had been captured by the British forces during the revolution, he would have been hanged.

His steadfast refusal to arrogate royal honors to the office is worthy of respectful remembrance. The last few presidents in the last century and this one could have picked up on that hint a little better.

Hear, hear!

Refusing to accept America as his conquest, along with his refusal of a third term, shows that Washington was much more of a Liberty President than he was a War President. And that at a time when there were precious few examples of countries which did not have a King or other form of monarch

Still . . . President’s Day falling during Black History Month does tend to highlight Box’s comment.
