Do not do a restore of any kind until you read up on the fucked up bullshit.

If you can remove sp1 from your add/remove programs do that now.

HP is working on it. It does not affect all Hp computers just hp pavilion and compaq presario desktops.

Actually, I was just at the Windows Update site yesterday and there was a patch of some sort in the critical updates to correct that problem. And yes, I have an HP Pavillion.

*editted to add the description of that update*

Alert: HP Pavilion and Windows XP Service Pack 1 Incompatibility

Alert: Windows Update has detected that your computer is a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion desktop or Compaq Presario desktop PC with Windows XP pre-installed. After you install Windows XP Service Pack 1, you might encounter an issue with the PC System Recovery utility. If you use this utility to perform a non-destructive system recovery, you might be unable to start your computer. Recovering from this error requires a full destructive system recovery, which results in the loss of all user data. Hewlett-Packard will release an update to the PC System Recovery utility soon. When you install that update, this alert will no longer appear in Windows Update. Please refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q329450 for additional information.

For more information about this issue, read Microsoft KB Article Q329450. (This site may be in English.)

I saw something there and an HP alert pop up that is the link.

I don't know.

Let me tell you, it affects Pavilions something awful. I work in tech support and have dealt with at least three different errors related to the XP Service Pack 1. Some of them don't affect the operation of XP as they won't even allow the pack to be downloaded and installed. Other issues have created horrible messes that have only been taken care of with destructive recoveries

I had previously downloaded and installed SP1 and it DID have a bad result. I ended up doing a destructive restore. I have since then downloaded and installed it, and the fixes. (I checked a little while ago and there was a second critical update dealing with this issue). Thus far, my pc seems to be running OK, considering it IS running XP. I've also had other programs make the pc act the same way tho. It's a HP. That alone says it.

I have a Compaq, which was preinstalled with xp. I removed it and install my own bought version. Will I still have the same problem?

It shouldn't affect store bought versions of XP the same way it does the HP installs of HP.

Thank you for responding. I just wanted to make sure.

Ok then i'll go see if the patch is there.

I'm going to go Ghost the damn thing and i wanted this thing resolved first.

I have an Hp Pavilion and have installed SP1, but have not had any problems with it in over a month since I installed SP1..

Of course, I also reformatted my hard drive and installed my own version of XP. Hope that helps.

I downloaded SP1 as soon as it came out. We have had no problems, however i have not did a restore either.
