Situation:

There is an asteroid that may or may not impact Earth in the next year. Scientists and Astronomers do not know but they say that in a years time there is a 1 in 200 chance for said asteroid to impact the world. The Asteroid is about a kilometer long, made of dense rock and will impact somewhere in North America at the speeds of 28 Kilometers a second. The characters are also 500 kilometers away from the source of the likely impact.

It's not a dinosaur killer but people are worried that such an asteroid will destroy some of modern infrastructure.

The story then goes on into depth about how people react to the news of such a possible disruption. Many believe that the modern society (it's 2020 after all) would collapse whilst others are pointing out that such an impact may not even happen after all. Nevertheless there is a sense of caution here.

Where the Smut Begins

As a result in this event, a son decides to make a move on his own mother and tries to seduce her. The story then goes into the detail of the push and pull though eventually she does agree and the two have sex. For month the relationship continues they have sex whilst the asteroid impacts.

So given that this story will be between 20,000 to 30,000 words long how would I show the imminent asteroid? What changes do you think would happen whilst this is going on?

I'm at a loss as to whether to let the asteroid hit North America or not so I was asking for some help here. I mean having the asteroid not hit would be a good ending but also showing it hitting would also be interesting.

Mom: I was watching a show on 'Discovery' that said an asteroid could hit the Earth and basically wipe out all life here.

Son: That's awful.

Mom: It is.

Son: What should we do?

Mom: Get naked and fuck on the sofa.

Son: What?

Mom: You don't want to get naked and fuck on the sofa?

Son: Well, uh...

Mom: How about in your bed?

Son: Well, okay... Sofa's fine...

You can't say there's a 1 in 200 chance of impact and also state where the collision will be. That's a huge contradiction.

Also, I'm intrigued by the specific impact speed. 11.2 km/s is the Earth's escape velocity and therefore an approximate minimum, but why 28 km/s?

You're right. Let's change it to 1 in 30. But no one knows where the collision will be.

I used this to get an idea - https://www.education.down2earth.eu/impact_calculator

It will not be in North America at all. It will be in the UK. Or Africa. Or even Antarctica.

You know: just like there was no "campaign" here or in most of the world in 2012. This glazed-eyes, ignorant, Yank self-obsession, as if the other 7.5 billion people did not exist, is beginning to grate a mite.

Originally it was predicted to hit Europe somewhere. The EU fund an early strike Deep-Impact-style to break it up, but Russia sabotages one of the warheads and several large fragments have trajectories bringing them down along the eastern U.S.

The Americans, who up to this point have been helping half-heartedly and generally preparing to watch a disaster movie unfold in real time on their screens, are suddenly in chaos, with only hours to go until impact...

With four months notice how would I show this change or development in 2020 as the mother and son prepare? I'm not sure if I want the asteroid to miss or hit earth.

Either or is a good idea.

Jake and his mom sat down to watch. "I feel bad about this," his mom said. "Millions of people could die and we act like it's entertainment."

Jake gave a half shrug. "There's nothing we can do anyway. Besides there's still hope. There's one last chance to stop the meteor. NASA and the ESA have put all their best minds together."

Indeed, on the TV the picture changed to an exterior view of the spaceship approaching the rocky meteor, a kilometre-wide behemoth that threatened to wipe Belgium off the map. Jokes aside, the destruction of a large part of Europe was certain if the mission failed. The evacuation had been going on for weeks now, and in the midst of the pandemic too.

The sharp contrast between sunlight and shadow was stark on the meteors surface. The approach was slowing as the spaceship's thrusters fired at the edges of the screen. "The Phoenix is only one of four such spaceships currently landing on the -"

The voice fell abruptly silent. For a long minute there was only the visual showing the careful touchdown. Suddenly the voice was back, and full of tension. "The Chimera, one of the three sister ships, is reporting a major systems failure. Their attitude jets are offline - and they are claiming it's sabotage."

Jake gasped. "Sabotage?" his mom said. "Why would anyone want to sabotage the mission?"

"The Russians, maybe," he said.

They watched, as millions of others no doubt watched, in rapt fascination, for hours, as astronauts assembled drill rigs and set them into action. The machines were fully automated, the whole operation self-running once started. Great plumes of dust and debris hurled out into the vacuum of Space as the drills burrowed ever deeper into the heart of the meteor.

Meanwhile, the astronauts positioned and armed the nuclear warhead, ready to be propelled down once the drilling was done. "That's one of ours," Jake said proudly. "Adapted from a B83. One-point-two megatons."

"But only three of them now," his mom said. "Will that be enough?"

Jake shrugged. "Hope so."

Hours more passed before the bomb was sent on its final mission and the Phoenix lifted off again. The countdown to detonation was an agony of suspense. "You can feel the whole world watching," Jake said, too excited now to do anything other than watch. His bladder had been aching for an hour now, but he ignored it. The bowl of crisps between him and his mom was untouched, their hands clasped in trepidation.

"10... 9... 8..." the voice said dispassionately. Jake stopped ever breathing. "7... 6... 5..."

"I can't watch," his mom said, but didn’t look away.

"4... 3... 2... 1... Time."

Nothing happened.

The Phoenix was now well away from the surface, far enough indeed that the finite extent of the meteor could be seen. Abruptly, and for a mere fraction of a second, a column of light almost like a laser shot out from the drill site. There was no sound, of course, making the event something of an anticlimax.

"What does that mean?" Jake's mom asked.

"I don't know," he started to say, but flinched in surprise as the great rock fractured. Still there was no sound, but great sheets of rock and dust burst out from cracks lit from below by a hellish red. "Oh, wow," he breathed.

Cracks that widened slowly, until it became clear to all who watched that the mission had succeeded, that the meteor had broken into two, into three, into four, into five, indeed, and a hundred more besides, though none of significant size.

"Yes!" Jake screamed, his mom too, and they clutched at each other, desperate to share their joy, their relief, and perhaps, if they not been mother and son, they would have done more, but they separated awkwardly, and sat again, grinning at the spectacle on the television.

"We're waiting for NASA now," the voice said. "They will be analysing the trajectories of the larger fragments. We should be hearing any moment now... and... oh."

"Oh?" Jake's mom said, frowning. "Oh what?"

"It wasn’t enough," the voice explained, no longer as calm as before. "The largest fragment will hit northern Romania in... in five hours. The four other major fragments are headed for the Eastern seaboard of the United States, in a little over five hours."

The programme ended abruptly, and Jake and his mom stared at the dark screen in shock.

"What do we do," she asked eventually, but Jake had no answer for her.

This is an interesting concept. The son had to avoid his feelings for his mother for years and figures with the world ending "Why not?" and makes his move. The mother, very hesitant at first, but decides "why not?" herself because its not like it matters anyway if they're all going to die.

Yep. I was planning on giving the characters three or four months before the asteroid is sighted. Ramp up the tension over time.

But given this do you think I should have the asteroid hit earth or not?

That one is difficult to determine. Saving the planet is good, but it would be a difficult life for them if they continue their relationship, unless they decide to keep it a casual thing. But I say destroy the planet, let them die happily in each others arms.

A 1 kilometer asteroid won't destroy the planet's biosphere. Such an asteroid impacts earth about once a million years. But what will likely happen is that there will be global catastrophes like a minor extinction event, crops fail with famine, a cold winter and breakdown of law and order. But humanity would still survive.

But humanity would still survive.
General "Buck" Turgidson : Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?

Dr. Strangelove : Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.

Ambassador de Sadesky : I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor.

The asteroid stops, but not by any force of man. Against all laws of physics, it holds position relative to the Earth, as if it might continue its deadly fall at any moment.

pf cpourse Jake had an answer...he was just too busy diving Mom's muff to voice it.

it becopmes a new moon. Therefore all those women that told guys they would have sex with them "once in a new moon" hve to pay up.

(and yes, I know there is actually a new moon once a month)

I read a story long ago (not at Lit) about a guy who was dating a virgin. She would not give it up, but she would still date him. But he really, really wanted to fuck her. One day he had her over to his place for dinner, and he hooked up a fake radio broadcast, announcing the start of a nuclear war and the bombs were on their way! He (correctly) figured she would not want to die a virgin, and would fuck him then and there. She did.

Of course she was not pleased when she found out it was all a hoax.

Like that old couple that holds hands while watching the tidal wave come for them in one of those end of the world movies.

It will become very hot and romantic concept if relation between mother and son handled wisely. Before Astroid news Jack's mom is reluctant to his indecent proposal. She is homely good character woman loving her family and husband.

Mom is beautiful and Jack is having crush on her. Jack is following her for few months and flirting with her praising her beauty and other things. Initially she takes it lightly as son-mom friendly movements and both maintain friendly nature without crossing any limits. Later he started hugging her without reason, kissing her on cheeks, which is new to her and surprises her but she takes it as son's love towards his mother.

But when Jack sees mom does not opposes his flirty nature and friendly with him, it boost his confidence. One day with courage he asks her to provide him sexual favour. Limits crossed, she surprised at first but become angry on him and denies Jack's proposal. Mom stop speaking with her son for next few weeks.

When news out about astroid impact, son again proposes her for relation. Till now except mother-son relation, she do not want any other relation with her son. But she do not want her son die unhappy and unsatisfied and she agrees to his proposal at the end.

Jack fuck his mom with her concent. Dad is around but not aware about his wife getting daily fucked by his son.

Mother knows how young hormones behaves so she takes promise from her son that he will not touch her when in public and maintain mother-son decorandum. As a good mother and wife she wanted to hide their relation from outside world especially her husband. Because she loves her husband and do not want to spoil relation with her husband before death. To show to outside world they maintain their mother son decorandum.

That's a lovely idea for a story, that Jack's mom (what's her name?) would overcome her natural caution in order to give her son what he so badly wants in the final days before the earth's firey demise!

THe effort that she must make to keep him in control, so that he no one else knows what is happeneing... She must have to give in to him completely when they are alone so that when they are in public he is satisfied and will not let on to her husband or neighbours the nature of their relatinoship.

The feelings that she must have to wrestle with... THe natural love and care and attention that she must feel for her son, whilst the shock and shame that she feels at having to submit to his desires...

REally nice concept for a story!

I think the asteroid should hit, at least it would make son and mom's action for naught. The twist is that it didn't hit civilization, it hits an empty plain, causing massive damage but no lives were lost. Mom and son did this because they thought it was the end for them, wouldn't it be amusing if it wasn't. Now they have to live knowing they committed this act, but their lust for each other can't be contained. So they accept that this is now their relationship.

Let the asteroid hit first, not extensive damage but it will cause a change in the radioactive property in the vicinity. This will lead to abnormal hormonal changes in virgin males and then the fun begins.
