After having a long chat with my scale tonight we both decided that I will not buy any more Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream (everyone in Texas please cry for me) or any more Lemon Marain(sp) Pies from the frozen section in Wal-Mart. *sigh* I need to lose apox 25 lbs by Christmas.

I know a sensable diet and watching calories is a huge deal. Which I am adjusting my grocery shopping list now. But I also know excersize is a huge deal also. So, is walking or running more productive for better results by December.

Also what home excersize could I do to help?

Walking is more productive.

Running while overweight'll kill your knees and walking 45 minutes every other day briskly will do you just as much good.

switch between walking normally then a little faster untill yyou work into a run , thats what i used to do on the threadmill

OK I got good news for you!!!
Remeber lemon merenge is the lowwer fat pie.

You are my hero! :) I might treat myself to one or two slices a week. My greatest fear is getting back into the ummm this is so good won't hurt if I have another slump :)

Running burns more calories, ergo running is more productive.

Yes, the first few times you run might be hell, but after awhile you'll grow used to it. Also you're more likely to stick with it if you find a friend or someone to run with you.

Swimming works all the muscles so if you can find a pool, that would be another way to go.

As far as home exercises go there's always sex a guaranteed calorie burner, if you have stairs you could use those too, also while in basic training our first sergeant told us about commercial PT, which is while a commercial is on tv do some sets of push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, etc...

Hope this has helped, personally I need to lose a little weight myself. 10 lbs. so far...15 to go.

Good Luck!

Silly Purrde!

You shouldn't be eating Homemade Vanilla by Blue Bell! *Everyone* knows that it's the Strawberry and Homemade Vanilla that's the BEST! heheh!

Oops, just be careful whatever you choose. =)

Whether you run or walk, try to do it on an empty stomach. That way your body will use it's own fat for fuel and not the food that you just ate.:)

Good luck.

I am marking tomorrow as my first day I start taking better care of myself (eating habits) and trying to lose weight.

HOW ABOUT>>>

Recently I took up In line skating... roller blading.... It has all the same benifits of running (and if you don't fall and break your ass), none of the stress on knees that running has....I generally do 5 - 10 miles when I go out and I vary the pace to get the most effective work out. If this is an option for you, I highly recomend it.

Also I have found that following the weight watchers plan (boot leg version) I keep my weight down... I had gained a bunch of weight because of my job... driving... and in the past few months have lost 30 pounds and am back to my normal weight. GOOD LUCK

eat less + excercise is the only way to loose weight in a sensible manner

Running is good but as people have said it stresses the joints - so try and run on grass or woods as oppossed to tarmac.

They key to excercise is to get the heart rate up - a slow walk is OK but you are not getting enough aerobic work out - if you can walk and then do 5 mins light jog that will be good

It will be hard to begin with if you havent excercised for a while so dont over do it otherwise you might loose motivarion straight away - just build it up slowly

Rained today. I guess that means Summer is over in Texas :) I think I'm going to walk in circles in my living room hehe

Why is everyone down on running?

If you stretch 3 to 5 minutes before and after you run you shouldn't have a problem no matter how old or overweight you may be.

There is a difference between aches and pain though. Aches are when after you're done you sit down and relax and sigh or go "oomph". Pain is where you are in constant agony.

As long as you don't try to go all out the first few times, you should be fine.

Between walking or running.....whatever you are most
comfortable with, but walking is on the whole much
better........start with 10-15 minutes a day.........and
work your way up.........one of the best and safest forms
of exercise :)

I don't know if it's that as much zach, but walking IS easier on body, the knees and legs and muscles--it is an easier excercise to enjoy (I think) than full-out running.

I walk 25 to 30 miles per week (and I do sprint several hundred yards each day during those walks), and have lost 60 pounds in two years--today, I feel great because of walking, an exercise I enjoy without pain.

All great advice (and common sense) regarding warming up exercises--very, very important to keep yourself from muscle injury.

Best to Purrde Flower. Enjoy whatever excercise you like that keeps you motivated in doing it!

I love both. But if you are just starting out I would stick with walking for now...work your way up to jogging over time. IF that is what you want to do. But in line skating is brilliant also. I try to do a variety of activities from walking, jogging, in line skating to step aerobics. Step for me is brilliant...since I can do it at home in front of the tv. I just put on a favorite show...turn on the timer and go at it. I don't even notice the time...since I am enjoying the show. Whatever gets you up off the couch and exercising is wonderful. You might find that you don't like a certain activity and you might be surprised at the ones you do like. Just keep active and watch your diet.

That is just what has worked for me...and I have been doing this for over 10 years. I was lucky...I didn't need to really lose much weight but when I started I sure needed to tone and get myself healthy.

Good luck...*s*

I'd agree with the walkers, PF.

Over the same DISTANCE you will burn as many calories as running (it will take a little longer).

Be very careful with "stretching", more people hurt themselves stretching than excercising. It is best to "warm up" by walking a little slower to start out then pick up your pace and stride.

At your age, a good target heartrate would be in the 140 to 150 beats per minute area (aerobic excercise level). Learn how to take your pulse as you walk. Twenty or thirty minutes every other day IN your target heart rate zone is good.

Remember, walking is not strolling. Your pace should be 3 to 4 steps every 2 seconds, 90 - 120 min. at a stride slightly longer than your normal walking speed.

You will probably "plateau" or even gain some weight after you start to get into shape! Why? Muscle is denser than fat, so keep track of measurments as well as pounds. If you plateau with 5 or 7 lbs to go it won't bother you as much if you see that the "old middle" is still disappearing!

Don't forget to cool down after your walk, it's nearly as important as the gradual warm up. Slowly walk your heart rate down below 100.

Good Luck!!;)

one of the best things to do is have a wide variety in your workout routine. you shouldnt just walk or run. how about running 1 day and swimming the next, on the 3rd day play volleyball and so on.

for the record running is better than walking. if youre out of shape running will be hell at first, especially if you overdo it. start slow and work your way into a more vigorus workout. and as mentioned before plenty of stretching will help.
