It's silly, pointless, sneaky and petty. I do it all the time.

what is the etiquette re: voting for one's own stories? gauche & self-serving, acceptable and expected, something else? is there a consensus view on this?

sub joe can travel in time. He is HG Wells great-great-great grandson.

Edited to add: apparently I can too? Off to have an affair with Dawn Wells back in 1960.

Seriously, there is a problem with this all over the board today. Index files in the database probably need to to be rebuilt.

I can't bring myself to do it, as is evident by my current lack of H status and lovely cash prizes.

My conscience can't get past the idea that it is cheating, hence unfair to other authors, (even though a lot of them probably do it themselves. ) Why do I suddenly feel like I'm getting the shitty end of the stick here? I guess it's really true that nice guys finish last.

I suppose I can accept the idea of someone doing it one time for each story, but I don't suspect it ends there.

It seems to me my opinion of my work is already a well known quantity, if I didn't think it was good I wouldn't post it. So I've already given my opinion in offering it.

At the same time, an author with a persistant troll may feel justified in dropping a five on a story that is getting a repreat troll vote, rather than constantly asking it be removed.

For me, it's a rareity. I won't say never, because things do come up, lik eneeding anothr vote to qualify for a contest etc. where I might feel the temptation to stongly to say no :)

Lit voting works off of an honor system, which is perhaps not the best way to go about things when cash is involved. It goes without saying that trolls will always be a factor as will self-voting.

On the other hand, it is a free site and the owners work very hard to maintain it despite all our bitching and complaining. If it was a pay site, I would have suggested another system long ago.

I don't think a single vote is going to make a huge difference in terms of contests, etc. (I assume we're not talking about a couple dozen alts, here. That's a different critter altogether.)

Yeah, it was a little vague of what was being asked.

How many in the cyber world, though, do you think honestly have moral issues with voting more than once when money and exposure is involved? It doesn't make much sense to even ask, 'cause most of those who don't have a conscience about doing it in the first place will never have the conscience to admit to doing it after the fact. And, I'm pretty sure it can be done easily enough without an alt, though I'm not about to list the various methods. ;)

I ahve never voted for myself, but I do vaguely remember 5 bombing a friend's story b/c she got three one votes from some Anonymous troll.
