Today I bought a new desktop motherboard with a new Intel processor and new memory with a new video card online and am going to be updating the computer hardware soon when the order arrives.

I downloaded a academic version of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit from Microsoft online so I can get the latest and greatest operating system running I hope.

I will be stuck going on the internet with the Dell laptop computer with Windows Vista in the meantime.

This is going to get interesting.

I am going to try to go from Vista Home Premium 32 bit to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, I hope this works.

Ask bidrednz. :)

Unfortunatley the answer is no. You will have to perform a clean install but it will be worth the effort, Windows 7 rocks.
Vista was and is the biggest piece of crap software ever written!

So Vista has enough bugs that I should Raid?

One of the biggest pains with Vista was the amount of resources it wastes so Micro$oft could play big brother via the DRM (Digital Rights Media) programs. Then there was all the driver issues.

A few weeks ago we got a Dell Inspiron mini with windows 7 starter. The screen is a bit small for me and I haven't really done a lot on it yet but hands down IMO, Windows7 is a million times better than vista
I have vista on 2 other laptops and I hate it, its a pain in the ass. Go with Windows7

As long as there are device drivers for 64 bit Windows 7 I am going to give it a shot on the desktop computer, I put a new Asus Rampage 2 GENE motherboard in the mATX case with a Intel core i7 940 processor and 6 GB. of ram then there was the new nVidia video card that ran me $178.00, hell with a major hardware upgrade I should go with 64 bit Windows 7 professional, the Windows 7 professional CD will be $68.00 at a academic price.

I ran XP Pro on my old computer, I changed to 7 Home Premium 64bit when I built this one. After talking to the guys at the computer shop I decided that the extra goodies in 7 Pro & 7 Ultimate are'nt worth the extra money.

IMHO XP Pro was brilliant but 7 is better.

Sounds good. I am told it's quicker because of how it uses and allocates memory. I run XP pro for a very small business so may fell more comfortable with pro. Probably don't really need it though.

So far I see a lot more signed drivers in Windows 7 then XP Pro.

I don't know what that means in a practical sense.

Drivers approved by Microsoft to work with the operating system.

I'm running Vista on 7 machines. Since SP1 nary a problem. I like it. Windows 7 is running on one laptop and it looks really good but most of my heavy duty apps aren't supported on it yet. Now that the bugs are out of Vista I think it is far superior to XP pro. Just my humble opinion.

Why not put SP2 on those Vista machines?

It will mostly fix security stuff and give you more drivers for the hardware.

Now if you are wanting a faster machine there is the 64 bit version, just do not go over 4 GB. of memory.

I have SP2. I was just saying the problems, of which there were many, mostly went away after SP1. Now they are quite stable and the features, especially searching files and folders on multiple hard and external drives, are quite nice. The sidebar holds alot of useful tools also.
