Ok, so in a random conversation I agreed to buy one of my friends (female) a vibrator for xmas.

BUT, I don't know what to go for, or where the best reputable place to get one from is. (and cheapest!)

Recommendations required!!
Thanks :)

Depending on what she's expecting...

Hitachi Magic Wand - the standard by which others are judged.
This is not insertable, however, unless you buy some aftermarket attachments.

If she's expecting something insertable, visit Babes in Toyland, Good Vibrations or possibly Adam and Eve. The first two are more women-positive, the latter less so but is a reliable and reputable company.

Insertables have lots of options - lifelike, silicon, cyberskin, glass, etc. Did she give you any hint about what she was looking for? Or might like?

Silicon is easiest to keep clean but a little pricier.

A simple, more or less lifelike (or not) insertable vibe is nice - but resist the temptation to buy something enormous - most of us are just fine with the average size vibrator lots of places carry.

I love my glass dildo (doesn't vibrate).

And my rabbit (don't buy a cheap one),

And just a little silver bullet now and then.

Waterproof can be fun in the tub...

And then there are the double-shafted ones which fascinate me but I haven't bought yet...

Millie, who wish she had a friend like you when she was younger. (Her spouse buys her toys now!)

I'm a huge fan of Toys in Babeland (the store especially, though the website http://www.babeland.com/ is excellent and the customer service is unsurpassed). I've also heard a lot of great things about Blowfish.com.

The two I reach for 99% of the time:
-The Rabbit Habit/ Rabbit Pearl (all of my female friends have one now, and they're forever grateful). If you're going with this, be on the safe side and get one of the ones that takes 3 C batteries...the AA battery models are frequently not powerful enough.

-The Magic Wand. I'm not sure it's a great casual gift, but it's fabulous, especially with the G-Spotter attachment. If she didn't like it for some reason, she actually could use it as a massager.

I bought my first toy from Toys in Babeland, and I really liked their selection and their descriptions. I had just turned 18 when I started thinking about buying something and I really had no clue what I wanted or what any of the terms ment.

The vibrator that I have now, I bought with my ex-bf at a store. I don't know that I'd recomend that route if I was by myself. Just something about those places that creeps me out. I felt like I was walking into a cave, doing something wrong, and like some dirty old man might jump me on the way out when I went to a store.

Toys in Babeland's website reminded me of what I'd like a store to be like in person. Well-lit, open, helpful, and one thing that I really liked about them was that their packaging was descreet. I don't know if that's an issue for you, it doesn't sound like it would be. But, like I said, I had just turned 18 and I was living on campus. I didn't want anyone to have any idea that I had bought a dildo.

I still don't know very much about toys or what I want (I'm starting to think about making an addition to my collection of 1) but I do know that I would go back to Toys in Babeland. Like I already said (in a very rambly way) TiB had very good discriptions about the different prodcuts and they even gave information about groups of products that I haven't seen anywhere else.

I hope your friend likes her present!

I prefer www.mypleasure.com and www.sub-shop.com

If you are going to buy one for your friend, I suggest something not so big or multifunctioned. Not jelly, no cyberskin. Something universal... and since its your friend, nothing too crazy.

The silver bullet, or a double bullet is really nice. Some of them are more complicated then one of those universal remotes (with different settings, like pulse, fast, med, slow, around)
... not expensive and a girl's best friend. It makes car rides alot better!
There is one called "the butterfly" or "the ladybug" that is hands free, it is a bullet inside a shape of the above and there are straps that go around her legs... very lovely.
OOh, there is also one that goes on your finger, its tiny- but does the trick very well. Its called hm (sp?) the Fokonuko and it has interchangeable pieces for different sized nubs.

or a medium sized Gspot dildo.. maybe in a cool color with lovely little nubblies on it.

small - medium sized, not alarming ... not intimidating, well worth the money.

If you want to go all the way with it and blow her socks off... then get her something multi functioned. The Pearl Rabbit is famous, but there are other ones that www.afterhoursnovelties.net has like the "osaki, blue dolphin, beaver" that work great. Get something japanese made (they have better motors) and also on that site, there are multi function vibes that use ballbearings on a track THESE ARE BETTER then the ones with just loose pearls/beads.

There is a cream called Cleopatra's Secret... ya apply a pea sized amount and rub it into the clit - it enhanses pleasure, and an awesome oral/masturbatory aid for both to "fly solo" with or use with a partner.

((any more advice can be found in the "toys" section of the Blank Manual))

Okay, I'm biased.

You need to check out www.bedroommagic.com

I sell their products, and they have a lot of nifty stuff. I've got to admit, I'm not much of a fan of the rabbit, but you've GOT to feel "Mr. Natural." Seriously, it feels exactly like the real thing! Creepy, almost.

i only know what the sunday night sex show lady taught me . . . if a vibrator is too strong to hold to your nostrl, it's too strong for your naughty places!

The Toys in Babeland store is EXACTLY like that. The staff is extremely helpful but not overbearing, and everything is out on display to touch, turn on, and examine. I'm not a fan of sex stores, but I felt so comfortable I'd go back in a heartbeat.

If you were impressed with the website, you should definitely go check out one of the New York locations.

I just don't understand why sex shops have to be so creepy. IMO, the would sell more, especially to women, if they were more open and well lit. Something more like... ohhh that place in the mall that sells all the gadgets... Brookstone??

Anyway, that's kinda getting off the topic. Sorry.

I'd like to expand on this topic if I may. My wife loves the sensation of a vibrator, but she just can't get past the sound. The buzz get's into her head, she can't get past it, and it ruins the whole thing for her.
Does anyone know of a vibrator that is silent?

I can't say enough great things about the Wahl massager for a beginner. It's very non sexual looking and I suppose if you didn't burn it out as a vibrator you could use it to massage other body parts too! LOL!

Seriously...it's a great beginner vibrator and not someting she'd be embarassed to be caught with.

Best price is here (yes I just replaced mine after 5 years of service! LOL!)

I haven't found a silent one yet, and a lot of the really quiet ones are wimpy. The Rabbit's not bad, especially under covers and/or with music on/talking.

Also, I've never seen one in person, but you might want to check out the Eroscillator (sp?). Apparently it oscillates instead of vibrates, so it may be buzz-free. I'm sure there's a review that speaks to noise level somewhere online.

Yes! I had to make a tough choice between the Wahl and the Hitachi Magic Wand. The Wand won, but I'd still love to try the Wahl.

I would not recommend the Conair knock-off version of the Wahl though...it's weak, loud, overheats quickly, and there's virtually no difference between the high and low settings. Go for the original.

And ManofSteel, if memory serves me, the coil-type vibes like the Wahl are very, very quiet. It's much more of a hum than a buzz and isn't too distracting.
