Please help settle a heated argument that is on the verge of breaking up a friendship:

Would you shorten the word 'vegetate' to 'veg.' or 'vedge', or other? Is there a common rule to how to shorten such words (e.g. 'Vagina' = 'Vag.' or 'Vadge'?). The rationale behind 'vedge' is the common usage of 'fridge'. Yet, 'vedge' looks kind of funny. I have not seen the word used in print enough to be aware of common trends in its spelling. So, I turn to you people of this GB to help elucidate this troubling problem.

Thanks.

There's no explaining "logic" sometimes kid.

You are right, but I didn't think of that when I posted.

I don't see a reason to cut words down in the first place though. Must be my old age.

I believe the the short version of "vegetarian" is "idiot", but that's not Webster.

I'd use "vegge" long before I used "vedge".
