I submitted a first chapter to a story I'm calling Empathy. The youngest character is eighteen and there are no flashbacks or memories but my story was rejected with a message about underage content. I have no idea what underage content they are seeing. I have looked through the chapter several times and I can't find any underage content.

But I edited it anyway to make it seem like none of the characters even existed before they were eighteen and my resubmission was still rejected. For example, I changed the phrase, "I grew up on a farm" into "I lived on a farm". There is no underage content.

I have sought editors and I have sent a message to Laurel but it's been a while and I haven't heard anything back.

Maybe they have a problem with the word slaveling but the way I am using that word does not mean slave child. I have used the word slaveling before in stories that were not rejected to mean a slave who still retains some legal rights such as the right to sue their master if the master becomes too abusive. There is no underage content in this story.

The story is about a twenty-three year old who becomes a slaveling because of debt and his eighteen year old brother who has empathy for him. It is gay and does include incest and light bondage.

Please help.

It may be good to add at a note at the start:

Content Note: All characters are 18 or over.

and in notes-to-the-editor box (whatever it's called) when you submit, mention there that there's no underage content.

Sometimes, though, stories are rejected if characters behave in a way that suggests underage content.

Thank you. That is very helpful.

I can't imagine anything any of the characters do that is childlike. They talk about work, there is a mention of two of them planning to see a movie together, and they do sexual stuff. I do wonder that since they ride the bus, is there an assumption that the bus is a school bus and not a city bus?

If it bounces again, maybe I can take a look at it.

Hi all, I'm sorry to but in, but I have a question of which I'm not sure where to ask it. So please forgive this intrusion ftom a brand new user.
My question: do I submit my work as one long story and it is broken up into pages 1,2,3 etc. I have submitted an 8000 word story fir publication and not sure I've done it right ?. Thanks...and apologies in advance.

The site automatically splits stories longer than about 3750 words into pages of about 3750 words.
