Valentine's Day Story Contest 2009 Reminder and Support Thread

ha Ha HA, manyeyedhydra! I LAUGH at your paltry 3.85 for I shall be the Queen of the Last Place (tm) Contest with my 3.52 (guess there aren't enough lesbian cheerleader fans out there!). :D

Hey, no fair! Riling up scouries and the amazing alt army has got to be a technical violation.

:D

I'm saving the contest stories to read on Friday; I have the day off, but my kids will be at school. Unfortunately I don't have time to read Lit stories most days, because my kids are always around. (My teen goes to bed an hour later than I do...)

I'm spending the weekend at a hotel with my boyfriend; maybe I can persuade him to bring his laptop so we can read some of the stories there too.

Sweetheart, forget the laptop! Forget Lit for a day. Dim the lights and cuddle up to the boyfriend and make your own story. You can write about it next week. I'm sure you will get positive feedback.

The best way to win the Last Place (tm) trophy is to write a non-erotic, loving wife story in the science fiction/fantasy category and post it on the last day possible. It will get very few votes and they will all be one-bombs.

Hmm... the more I look at our anonymous overlord of theme, and a couple of other things, the more convinced I am that somebody has a brand new paint job on his ride.

Unfortunately, he must not have let the paint dry long enough, because the old paint is showing through. Still running on the same engine, firing on all the same old cylinders, too.

I'm this close to retracting my "not quite a troll" from a few posts back :p

Enough of my cryptic eye rolling :)

Still trying to finish my story. I'm about to skip the part that isn't wanting to come together, write the heat + ending, and see if that reverse engineers for me.

Actually have an intriguing idea in my fantasy world nagging at me too. May have to write that, as it may be intruding on the one that I've already started.

If anybody has a VDay themed story that they'd like to see spoofed in an LST3K, feel free to drop me a line ;) Or, if anybody wants to help me rip into a couple of not-VDay-themed-stories that I have already on hand, check out the link for riffers in my sig. It's so much more fun to share the pain of reading these, and the fun of tearing them to pieces.

I've read a few more, and I'm voting, but not commenting so far. I've been leaning away from commenting during contests where I have a horse in the race, because I feel like I'm fishing for reciprocation, and it takes me as long ( or longer ) to write a comment as it does to read the story. I never seem to make it through the entire list any more as it is, and agonizing over the right wording for a comment just eats into reading time *laugh*

There are some heart-warmers, some nice twists, and some serious heat in what I've read so far. A nice mix, living right up to expectations.

Certainly seems that way. A turd dipped in silverfrost still smells like a turd.

Its unbelievable... it took me a month to write my entry for V day because i was trying to tie myself in a certain direction.

Now that im back free as a bird i have come up with something i think is very good in only a week and i have to wait til after the contest to submit it. Well more time for editing i guess.

Plus would you authors post a story in the BDSM cat if it was only light mental domination and a pair of handfuffs? i wouldnt someone reading it expecting something that its not

I wouldn't post it in BDSM, because that category is mostly claimed by stories fully engrossed in the lifestyle.

I would almost suggest fetish, as that's probably the closest, but the readers may very well expect something kinkier/more taboo, and a little more centered. It is a possibility though. The right title, description, or maybe a disclaimer at the top could keep people from feeling dissapointed by light, rough play, which is by all rights a fetish.

Erotic Couplings is a catch-all for 1on1 sex. When all else fails.

Tough call without seeing the full story, but I would certainly avoid BDSM if you aren't well versed in the lifestyle.

Join the club. You should read some of the nasty comments posted to my story. By the way, your story was hardly interchangeable. Also, when comments are that off the wall, I'd just ignore them. If only I could take my own advice, though.

Yeah, I usually ignore them as well, but I've had a crap week at work and didn't feel like taking anyone's bull when I read that comment. lol

DG Hear, my boyfriend and I have been making our own romance story since the night we met :D But right now we're at a "What would you like to try?" phase, and a few people suggested to me that stories here on Lit might give us some brainstorms.

oh, yeah. and the games begin. My story just posted within the last 5 hours and already I got one feedback calling me the c-word and a comment telling me the reader is disappointed.

Someone remind me why I entered a contest about a holiday I loathe.

Oh, yeah. Cuz come December, I'd be kicking myself for not getting all the contest entry bonuses in the Survivor contest.

The First Valentines Day - LOVELY! by LawrenceD. Just my opinion anyway - but then again I am a fan of poetry in motion :) :D

Been reading and voting - but not commenting - is it just me or are a lot of people really just pissed off about love and the holiday in general?

We could all go back to making live sacrifices for Imbolc - the returning of the light LOLOL:eek:....But really I prefer reading these days LOLOL....

Good Luck everyone....

Oh and is there such a shortage of volunteer and/or collaborative editors out there that most if not all of these stories have problems that need to be cleaned up? Or is it just the mad rush to get it in that editing is left in the dust?

I refuse to read the feedback. I have an editor and I believe in her abilities. Other than that, the rest of you can take it or leave it. :)

Woot! Mine's finally moving again *laugh*

I swear that my muse is entirely dependant upon what point in the playlist my MP3 player at work is in. I hit points of inspiration randomly, out of the blue, connected with something playing. Just got me past the washboard-road of a spot that was keeping me from moving it forward from where it was.

The day before, it was an epiphany about something in SOTM that had been holding me up. The day before that, inspiration for something else I'm writing.

I have SOTM figured out. There are several tracks from the Chrono Trigger/Cross soundtracks that seem to inspire that story. I can set those up to loop while I'm writing. Everything else seems to be more random.

Oh well, at least I should get the darn thing done in time, now. :D

Is there a full moon? I just received a comment from HH Dumbass, someone who's never posted a story here, unless he's someone's sock puppet, and suddenly, he's the Literary critic for the New Yorker.

My opinion is this. Everyone has a different writing style. Everyone writes at a different level. Writing is a life long apprenticeship and it's something that you must love to devote the time and hard work that it takes to write a story. Whatever the style and whatever the level, we all need to respect the effort and the desire to pour one's heart out and to share their work.

I don't understand these types who are so unappreciative or who just want to start trouble by posting derrogatory comments to someone's work. Of course the mature thing to do is to ignore the basher, yet sometimes it just feels good to respond to them.

I can't imagine someone being so miserable to take the time to write mean and nasty comments. Where does that desire come from? Instead, they should do something positive. They should write a story...and then kill themselves (lol). Just kidding...about them writing a story.

Agreed.

Why do you have to wait until after the contest?

YOu know, BDSM also includes D/s. A story based on that does belong in BDSM.

Not everyone chooses to use an editor, regardless how many have time to help. There is also a vast difference in what each person 'edits', in my opinion.

I've been reading the stories and voting as I go. Good luck to everyone!:)

I thought I'd post my totals before the great vaccumn takes away half my votes. haha. I's OK, score is dropping like the temperature here. Good luck all. Hold on tight, looks like a bumpy ride

Oh don't I know it!

:) I was just making a remark on editing over all and doesn't anyone seriously edit anymore: read semi rhetorical in nature. For me I do a lot of self editing = I look for my comma whoring - oooh I am bad with them, and where sentences just doesn't quite read right. I've been known to read them out loud, properly inflected LOL, just to figure out whats wrong with it (One of those; its not laying right - whats wrong with the freaking thing, Speak! Say it again, OH that!).

Not always clear but definitely good for cleaning up grammar issues (tenses especially). I try my best to catch all the little crap and some times big crap that gums up the works and has been known to drive readers singularly bats lolol....That way when I do send it to an editor or a look-see person of wonderful leaping mind, they don't have to work quite so hard on little shit and can pay attention to flow/arcs/plot/characters ya know?

For the most part the stories are good. But some real editing is needed for about 95 % of them :)

I am sort of regretting not entering my story. But 8 to 10 lit pages are too much for a contest. I think I will be entering it into Novels/Novellas when I am done repairing the disservice I did to it trying to bend it to the Contest Parameters.

Reads are steadily going up. Votes and comments are increasing. Score, well it's going in the other direction. It is fun to read the comments even though some are pretty negative. Hell, one person want to kill me Now, that's not nice. haha

Good luck all. Just waiting for the big vote sucking sound. Over 409 now. Hope I hold onto 25. LOL :)

Don't you just love comments like those? You almost gotta take it as a compliment that your writing lit such passion in them-- even though it's negative energy.

Gotta love those comments like, "I hope that bitch gets AIDS."
Hello? It's not a real person. The character is not going to get AIDS unless I make her get AIDS (which I don't ever plan on doing). I really don't understand why people get so worked up about characters in stories. Again, I try to take it as a compliment since the person seems to have lost sight of the fact that its fiction.

Although after so many comments like that, one has to wonder..
oh, I better not finish that thought. I'd rather chalk it up to good writing.

...The character is not going to get AIDS unless I make her get AIDS (which I don't ever plan on doing)...

Fictional written characters ARE subject to suffering from Colonic issues however. just saying... :D

(Not to mention the female characters having periods... )

Forgive me, Webmaster, for I am new, it has been 10 days since my last comment...

I am so happy that I finally found this thread again. Is there a way of keeping track of where you posted on this site? I think that I commented on another thread, and I have commented on a story that was uber romantic, not in the contest tho...

I was so happy that for two days I kept up and read it all (On the contest)... Wow, this place is BIG! I am sad to realize that I cannot possibly read everything here. Damn it, I just found it. Oh, well, I have resigned myself last year to the fact that there are books that I have owned for years, and have not cracked due to lack of time. Sigh.

I wrote a story in the contest. I am not the only one the trolls are chomping. Yes, proud Mr/Miss/Mrs Anon has now become Creative Writing 101. And as V-Day is loud and proud in my story, he couldn't pull his usual schtick. "...It could be any day...) I did not enter to win, I entered to see if anyone would would read, and comment. The poor troll fed me. (Don't tell he/she/it, they would die of shame...)

...Not anonymously
Wow, there have been some really great stories in this contest. Kudos to all for taking time and sharing their ideas with the world.

Heartfelt
