Vaginal prolapse/incontinence

I went for a checkup last week and my doctor told me I have a prolapse of the wall of the vagina, most probably caused by the forceps delivery of my son 22 years ago. I had my tubes tied 6 years ago and when I stopped the contraceptive pill the same thing happened. With physiotherapy and doing kegel exercises it improved, but I still have occasional stress incontinence. :(

I have been told I may need surgery to correct this and "lift everything up". Have any other women here had this surgery? Did it fix your leakage problem? Was your sex life affected/improved? I would like to be able to be fisted at some stage, will this still be possible?

did you ever find out an answer?

This sounds interesting... You think we need a womens forum?

I guess this is a scary subject! :D The number of women who will post about their menstrual cycles, childbirth, sexual preferences et al but mention  incontinence and everyone clams up

One in three women will experience this at some time in their lives. As we hit menopause and our hormone levels drop the damage done years before can become apparent.

I go to the gynacologist next Monday. No doubt I'll find an answer then (but I might not ask about the fisting thing...... )

It's a shame but you are right. I applaud you for bringing up the subject because it might stigmatize you a bit (well, that sounds dramatic, but you know what I mean) on a sex-orientated board. I'm afraid I can't help you out with answers YET, but statistics say I'm not far from becoming one of the 1 in 3 women you were talking about. I could and would tell you plenty about menstruation and attached problems though. Have had my share and wouldn't hesitate at all sharing this with others if that would be helpful.

Hope everything will go well for you on Monday.

Hey all, I have no problem talking about this. I have given birth to two huge kids that really stretched me out. I do have occational leakage when sneezing suddenly. Kegels were reccomended but it hasn't done all I want.

I noticed an advertisement in Atlanta Manazine while on a trip there. This whole clinic was dedicated to 'vaginal rejuvination' surgery aiming at tightening up the pelvic floor muscles. This was to fix incontinence and supposedly helped you feel 'tighter' while having sex. According to the ad, they said the surgery was out-patient and only took about 30 minutes.

This sounds too good to be true but I want to check it out anyway. I live on the other side of the country so will need to find a doctor here. If you find out any good info on this subject let me know.

I think lots of women will be looking for a solution to this problem in the years to come. I am not going back to diapers! ;)

My best friend's partner is a gyno who specializes in vagioplasty. (I think that's the right word?)

He's done reconstructive work for a myriad of reasons, including prolapsed vaginal walls/prolapsed uterus. According to what he's told me of his follow up visits (I forgot how often, but as he's typically their gyno too, he sees them at least once a year on average), the results are positive and well worth it, both for self esteem and for pleasure.

As for the incontinence issue, I don't have an answer for you. This was something we discussed nearly a year ago.

I just hope it's not painful for you in the meantime :(

My mother had this surgery done many years ago after i was born along with recontrucitve surgery on the rectum wall. ( Ireally did a job on her coming out) She has been having incontinencce problems again now for several years and has been recently diagnosed with IBS. After a recent trip to the Dr. she was told both her vaginal wall and her rectum wall have collapased againa dn she needs surgery again. They are hoping this corrects her incontinence problem (but they don't know for sure if it will) as it is very embarrassing for her when sheis out and has to RUN to the bathroom and sometimes doesn't make it. I am talking about both ways here.

I have no idea if it will help you sexually as she has been sexually inactive for many years do to the fact that my dad has severe heart problems and diabetes.

good luck.

My mom had major issues with stress incontinence after having me. I know she tried urethral collagen injections, which may have helped temporarily, but not significantly. She also had a surgery that failed...it might have been one of the "hoist/suspension" procedures. The expert she saw last said that one has a very low success rate in women of Northern European descent because there was something wrong with the strength of the connective tissue. The final surgery she had (again, not sure which one) was 100% successful, and the only complications were UTIs from the catheter afterwards.

I know she said that researching the surgeries and talking to several female urologists was paramount. Had she done the footwork, she wouldn't have had the first surgery because she really wasn't a great candidate. I don't know about sex life, but the last surgery was a quick recovery. I'll try to find out what she had done.

I'm back from the appointment - the doctor didn't think it was too bad, and I'm to keep doing the exercises and see him again in 6 months.

Surgery may be an option in the future, I'm hoping far into the future! :) Apparently I'm doing everything right - I'm not overweight, I don't smoke, I'm doing the exercises. I'm having more sex than I was when the prolapse happened before too which is probably helping a lot (well if it's not it's not hurting anything ;) :D )

Hope this helps

My mom had a similar surgery done a few years ago. The difference was her uterus was actually falling out rather than a prolapse and her incontinence was caused by her bladder falling out as well. They went in vaginally and put her bladder in a sling and it took care of most of here problems except if she has a sneezing fit then she may leak. As for her uterus coming out she had it removed she had no need for it anymore hey after me who could blame her, ha ha. I hope it may help with the lifting up part if you were wondering what they do. The surgery wasn't very painfull and she was out in 48 hrs.
