This may not be appropriate, but oh well. My Dad would have been ninety today. One of my sisters asked for a story about him to pass on to the family. You all are family...............

I think the three years we spent in Hagerstown were the best time of my life. Other than gaining a best friend I just lost this past year, the times spent with Dad stand out. There are four or five episodes that come to mind but this one was poignant.

I didn't get my license at sixteen like most guys I knew. I had to wait as there wasn't a second car and there were already two drivers for it. After getting my learners permit Dad decided a Saturday morning trip to Baltimore would be a great learning experience. Up off our street on to US Rte 40 we went. No parking lot, no country back roads; the main artery going from coast to coast for this boy! Right away the Dodge Dart was up to the speed limit of fifty-five. We headed toward South Mountain. Traffic was heavy and I was prepared to keep the right distance from the vehicles in front. On the four lane he said, "Pass these couple cars." Ok, now I was doing sixty. "Back down to speed limit." "Yes Sir" Now we are on the two lane portion moving up toward the pass at Gambrell State Park. "There's an eighteen wheeler you're going to have to pass." "I'm already doing the speed limit Dad." The eighteen wheeler was at least a quarter mile ahead. "He is going to slow down as we go up the mountain, you need to speed up." "But...." "Listen to me, you are going to pass that truck or park the damned car." Well, I knew he didn't give too many chances to follow his orders, so I was doing sixty-five. I was making up ground. "Scott, you have to pass that truck.!" Seventy. Remember folks, this was my first time behind the wheel. I pulled out in the other lane to move by cautiously. ""Hurry up we don't have forever." I hit passing gear, and flew by at seventy five. I have no memory of the rest of the trip or where the two us were going that day except to Baltimore on my first time behind the wheel.

Two thoughts. If you ever wondered where I got my lead foot, look no farther; father! And, when Dad said to do it; there was only one reply, "Yes Sir!"

I was laughing when I read your story:D So that's how you learned to drive so fast up the mountains!

Sorry I have been MIA...I got attacked by the flu and was down and out for a few days

Not long after I got my license, we spent our nites at the drag strip. Take the air filter off, lower the pressure a little on the back tires. That was safer than doing it from stop lite to s/l. One night a man with his family took exception to our style of street racing. He didn't know we were leading him right to the State Police barracks......:D:D

I don't tell a lot of stories about my brother, but one nite we were playing cat and mouse and I was riding shot gun. He made a left hand turn at excessive speed and I swear while on the two right hand wheels I could count the individual grass blades!!! :(

Glad you're better!!!!!

myself included, though I do have a friend who talked her husband into visiting each of the fifty states. No children makes that a bunch easier, but that seems a waste too. As far as horses go, I've had my time on them and my time being thrown off the ass end, but at 58 I'll deal with those under the hood much easier.

When you make those trips, stop by and leave us a few shots; hell, stop by even if you don't. ;)

thanks for the visit! I'll try returning the favor
