Using the same tropes/kinks/scenarios in your stories.

Hi all,

I just submitted a new story last night and it had me thinking about how I often go back to the same well of tropes, kinks, and scenarios in my stories. I often have women in tiny bikinis tanning, a shower scene, a dancing scene, and latex outfits. I guess it makes sense since I find those things to be a turn on.

Do you find that you go back to the same well often? If so, what tropes/kinks/scenarios do you keep going using?

I suppose it depends on the story I'm writing... but I tend to try to vary most scenes I pen. I like to mix things up and keep readers guessing. I like to move outside of my comfort zone as often as possible. Hell, I like to move outside of my prospective reader's comfort zone from time to time and introduce situations that some people might be surprised they actually enjoy... but again, it all depends on what type of story I'm writing. My interests and abilities range from vanilla to full BDSM, and everything in between.

And of course, my ego likes me to believe I could effectively describe a tree in a way that might inspire a reader to want to imagine giving it a go in the bedroom.

I don't set out to reuse things, or to always have particular kinks; I try to vary the details from story to story. But certain trends become apparent when I look back over my stuff after some time has passed. There's multiple instances of shared showers, massages, shaving of pubic hair by another person, applications of sunscreen, groups of ladies that include multiple ethnicities, and marijuana use. Probably others if I went looking for them.

Big time I go back to them, because they work for me, but I also try and come up with new stuff that floats me boat and stretches my imagination.

Right now Iā€™ve got a scene of a man and a woman where they are also both hold of another woman whose asleep while they fuck.

Not written that before.

Nothing wrong with a revisit so long as you've established the character's individuality outside of the sex and/or fetishes.

People desires aren't as individualistic as they think so plenty of people share commonalities.

It's fine to have similar desires across different characters but I'd be very cognizant when a particular want becomes a fulcrum which everything pivots around.

When you have cookie cutter folks (similar) with their sexual fingerprints tasked to do the individuality heavy lifting, you usually have a story problem on your hands.

A big thing for me was moving beyond the autobiographical to invented scenarios. That helped me to avoid too much repetition.

All I have is non-autobiographical.

I think to some extent it helps because some things the adventurous might consider mundane (due to their experiences) maybe things that those without that experience could look on as exotic.

I think starting with autobiographical helped. It was like training wheels. I could focus on how to tell the story, rather than the story. I guess it was a sort of writing exercise.

I had the same experience. I didnā€™t realize I went to the same well so often until I went back and reread some of my stories. It was then that I realized how many of them had a scene in a club, women applying sunscreen to their bodies, and someone showering.

My stories definitely arenā€™t autobiographical. I mainly write incest and lesbian stories but my fantasies and desires definitely seem to trickle into my characters.

Don't worry about it. They're your tropes because they work for you, they're the short cuts into your fantasy dialogues with yourself, which is probably the primary reason for your writing.

If I didn't have EB tropes I wouldn't have EB stories.

Ken Follett, is that you?

Every single one of his novels has cunnilingus in it.

I'm not against cunnilingus, he's just weird how consistent he is about it.

Thereā€™s a massive website out there called ā€˜TV Tropesā€™ that attests, in gigabytes of data (only slight exaggeration, I think), that your statement and question are a bit rhetorical. Tropes reoccur in every sort of creative entertainment.

Which isnā€™t always bad. In some cases, as the Ken Follett postings claim, theyā€™re certainly not going to be killer issues. I canā€™t say how accurate is the claim, Iā€™ve never read his books, but it doesnā€™t limit his sales if true. In some cases, judicious use of specific tropes can be your ā€˜calling card.ā€™

My most common sexual act tropes are likely anal and cum swallowing. Not even these appear in all of my stories, but likely only a handful that donā€™t have at least one of them. As to clothing, etc., I tend to have female characters who are quite happy to avoid underwear.

Certain names that I reuse for totally unrelated characters are markers of their personalities.

Erotic lactation and butt plugs. More because I find them fun to write about rather than being actual kinks.
Never experimented with the former in real life, but the latter I have, and they're kinda growing on me. šŸ¤—

Side note: never wear a butt plug to an MRI, even if you think it's 100% silicon šŸ˜³. If you don't like medical horror stories, don't Google it.

I...I mean...yes...but...sure...having said that...I mean...the doctors would ask...no, not for that specifically...yes the BDSM catagory...but...who...I know know...obviously...it's going to be horrific...but...do you really...I mean I guess it has happened...must have done...but...did you really...

You know what, okay, fine I won't.

Back when I wrote erotic stories regularly, I tried to do something different every time. I succeeded, for the most part. I did go back to using the same celebrities repeatedly for a lot of stories, I guess that counts. I tried to get positive things that were necessary out of every story, that counts too. If I ever write here again, or anywhere else, I will want that again.

Yes, totally! I pretty much solely write CFNM, and there are many recurring components in my stories: (18 year old) schoolgirls, MILFs, BBWs, Irish girls, beaches, Brazilian girls, my big dicked male MC ending up nude and exploited by women...I go back to the same well again and again and again, but it never appears to be in danger of drying up! It's a good thing I like the water...I can't speak for others, of course!

i absolutely love using the same tropes/kinks/scenarios repeatedly, which sounds lame, but i'm like. i find them super hot. and if i keep finding them hot, then it ain't broke so don't fix it?
