Toot Your Own Horn: Share your favorite scene in your stories.

One of my most whimsical and enjoyable stories to write was Teddy Bear. The premise is that a very large gift-wrapped Teddy Bear shows up on the doorstep of a young woman, Eleanor, one day, unexpectedly and mysteriously. She brings it in the house. A friend visits and leaves, and then this happens:

Celia left, eventually, and Eleanor walked back to the kitchen. She felt dejected. She didn't want to be alone, but the truth was, Lyle wasn't doing much to make her happy. He was good-looking. That much was true. He was the kind of guy you wanted to show off at an office party. But he was self-centered. There was something missing. There was a button that Eleanor needed pushing, and he wasn't pushing it.

She stared at Teddy Bear, propped up against a kitchen cabinet.

She pushed her hand against his heart.

The deep voice rumbled in response.

"I'm Teddy Bear, and I want to fuck you."

Eleanor screamed and backed up, almost stumbling, mouth agape.

The Bear sat silent on the kitchen floor. Eleanor stood with her hands clutching the tile counter.

She wondered if she'd misheard it. After all, it couldn't really have said what she thought it said, could it? She wondered if this was a weird practical joke. But who would do such a thing? She could not think of anyone. Lyle might yank her chain once in a while, but he'd never put in the effort to pull off something like this. It wasn't his nature to make any effort where a relationship was concerned.

Eleanor pushed away from the counter and approached Teddy Bear, slowly, tentatively.

She pushed her fingers against his heart again.

"I'm Teddy Bear, and I know you want it," the deep voice rumbled. "Touch me between the legs and I'll show you what I'll give you."

For favorite non-erotic scenes from my stories, I like the war sequence in Debrief and the car chase in Fear, Lust, and Vanity. Plenty of tension and excitement. Favorite seduction is Lisa convincing Elena to join the orgy in Girls Dorm Gathering, runner up is Pool Hustle (both sides).

It's hard to pick a favorite, but this moment from When The Dark Dresses Lightly makes me choke up every time I read it. That image of Kristin crying in utter defeat by the door is one of the first images that came to me for this story.

Maybe I had a chance of being happy again. Maybe. If I hadn't ruined it. I wasn't sure she would ever trust me again.

I fell to my knees in the snow, and I sat there for a long time. I cried.

And I let go.

Not of him. Of the guilt. Of my fear. Of the knife in my heart.

I wasn't betraying him. I was taking him with me, his love a part of me forever, to seek the happiness he had always wanted for me.

When I rounded the corner on my way up the hill again, I saw her. Standing on my doorstep, her hand and her forehead resting on my front door. Still. Just standing there, frozen in the small light above my door.

She didn't notice me standing on the road behind her.

She was softly crying.

Well, it's a bit of a spoiler, but it's definitely the final scene of Queen of the Roller Derby

It requires a little bit of context. Here is the final scene of the prologue. The narrator, Kitty, is recalling a memory from when she was nine years old. She's a lonely girl who is only happy when she's on her skates.

At the story's conclusion, Kitty is 72. She has been invited, along with her surviving teammates, to a reunion of their championship roller derby team, in front of a large audience of modern fans. To everyone's bemusement, Kitty has put on her skates.

Shit, that still makes me cry.

This is still my favorite non-I/T story on this site.
