Using song lyrics to enhance your stories?

Thanks for the correction - yes, trademarked. It used to be rare but with the whole multi-channel marketing now it's becoming more and more common. They're busily locking up album titles pretty much across the board these days. Another weird thing that's going on is the whole drive to lock multiple songs across different media (e.g. locking up the movie rights to a song or song lyrics).

I find this new thing of suing on "stealing" of three-note runs in a song scary and overboard. Like story themes, there are only so many note combinations in musical runs.

But their early stuff was incredible, Kill em all for me is still the standard in that genre and Ride the Lightning is up there as well....after those Albums, I'm on your side.

Slayer's music itself is excellent, but their lyrics at one point were so over the top it was obvious they were striving for shock value. They weren't as bad as cannibal Corps when it came to that(who is really?) but I felt it was a schtick[/QUOTE]

Haha.... cannibal corpse? If I were gonna roll with Death Metal, Obituary,Sepultura,Death, Dismember, Hypocrisy, and Entombed all blow Cannibal Corpse outta the water on both skill and lyrics. I'm not a Chris Barnes fan at all.

Yeah, Metallica's first two albums were gems, but, like, damn, they should have fucking retired ages ago. The sign a band has sold out is when they are musically influenced by the very bands they influenced to begin with.... Haha👠👠👠Kant

Three notes? Haha.... That's funny as Hell. Let me give you three songs and you can laugh as well.
Cream-sunshine of your love.
Eric Clapton/JJ Cale -Cocaine
Black Sabbath -NIB.

I'm willing to bet there are more than three notes shared among those three songs and it's funny Eric Clapton played in two of the bands.

<<<----Kantarii is still laughing by the way.👠👠👠

Laughing at what? You're unaware of the ongoing lawsuits?

It should be pointed out that a successful lawsuit is preceded by a
'cease and desist' letter. Said cease and desist letter spells out what is cited as a copyright violation.

Giving credit helps protect you from a plagiarism charge, but it does zip for you on a copyright violation--in fact less than zip, because it highlights the violation and tells lawyers you knew it belonged to someone else.

Yeah, but I never use more than eight bars.

Copyright lawyers suggest not using more than two lines (total).

The bottom line has already been mentioned, though. It's unlikely anyone will go after use in no-profit, anonymous posting. It's just that they could, with the law behind them. And then there's the ethics of it.

Sure, they can come after me...let's see...I've sold exactly 4 of that book that contains the lyrics. It is not one I would post here as it is mainstream(no sex). So my royalties were about 10 bucks. The can have all the money I made on that one.

Of course if they won the case, you could be stuck with all court costs. For them, that might be worth the effort. I don't see it happening, mind you.
