THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
words and music by Woody Guthrie

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

Vote for the dead

From the other side of the Atlantic I am not qualified to advise anyone how to vote.

What I will say is that the dead soldiers of WWII fought to preserve your right to choose (and that of Europe and much of the Pacific).

You should honour those who fought and died for your freedoms by making a choice, using your vote, even if you see the choice is between two alternatives neither of which you like.

Choosing what you see as best (or least worst) might be difficult but it is not as hard as dying for the right to vote.

I agree 100%, Og, and I will go to the polls tomorrow. For the presidency, I will vote against the man I see as the less bad, but there are candidates for other offices that are worthy of my support and ballot propositions that are worth supporting or opposing. I WILL vote tomorrow.

Someone on TV said, yesterday I think it was- that GWB was running against himself.

Possibly I agree.

A question to all americans: How many different ballots and offices and issues are there to vote for on election day? We only hear about the Pres over here. Senators? Govenors? Sheriffs? Judges? Best in Show?

We don't vote for govener this year (unfortunatly) but there are lots of offices up for graps. Representatives, school board, state college regents and more. Not to mention propasitions: will we amend the state constitution to forbid same sex marriage and/or unions? do we want the right to vote on new casinos coming into our state/neighborhoods? should we build a new communtiy building at the cost of 12 gazillion dollors over the next 20 years...

all that stuff.

It all varies, but my ballot contained:

President

Federal House

Federal Senate

State House

State Senate

State Treasurer

State Corporation Commissioners (people who have waaaaaay too much power considering no one in the state seems to have any idea they exist)

County Attorney

County Sherriff

County Healthcare District Commision

School Board

Water district commission (we have a lot of special taxing districts, etc  )

School bonds (both local and county)

And a ton of propositions ranging from whether or not people should be prepared to prove their citizenship at any given moment (read: racist laws wrapped up as immigration measures) to whether or not to allow the state to swap trust land with other public lands to whether or not to allow universities to sell intellectual property rights for stock instead of cash.

Oh, and all of the judges at state to municipal level.

A very long front and back ballot.

I know I'm forgetting some, but it's all signed & sealed and waiting for election day delivery.

Identity cards.

Welcome to the maschine; open to all imaginable abuse and then some.

Maybe it's just me but the choice between Bush and Kerry seems sorta like the choice between aiplane food and hospital food.

they don't feed you in coach, so I wouldn't know airplane food.

However I quite like hospital food. (It's really only bad if you're on a restricted diet.)

So I guess for me, the choice between bush and kerry is like the choice between starving and eating! guess I know who's getting my vote, lol!!!

SnP, thanks for posting Guthrie's song. Did you know he wrote it as an alternative national anthem to counter the militant "Star Spangled Banner" and to reclaim America for the common worker? The political verses are rarely seen by school children when they learn this song.

You like hospital food? Either I need to get sick in your neighbourhood or you need some one to cook some good food for you. (please consider that a standing invitation from a former chef)

I'm really not qualified to give and opinion on Bush or Kerry as a Canadian(which everyone knows are all commies). I was just being a smart ass.
However, From what I have been able to gather from watching Michael Moore movies and Smatterings of American TV, Bush is not the cuddly left wing president-type I imagine Lit authors to favour. I'm guessing your vote will be for Kerry. Am I right?

I'm definitely voting tommorrow, stem cells are on the ballot over here and I need to help them pass. Oh yeah, and there's those two guys in suits who are battling over who will rule the world and apparently the earth's axis will stop spinning if one california college student forgets to vote (the hubris of our state!). Eh, I'll be casting my meaningless tick for Mr. ABB and voting for the props I believe in. Go stem cells!

Yeah, I just knew it was subversive!

Hey look, this is *MY* country. I can bitch about it if I want to! I can disagree with who I want to. I can love the Dixie Chix!!! I can protest the police, the government, corporations and Bill O'rielly if I so choose. There's no such thing as an *un-American* American! I AM America. This land was made for you and me!:)

God Bless the folk singers.

I prefer this anthem. Thanks for the info 'dita!
