US Withdraws from World Conference Against Racism

Americans are absolutely right to do so. It's an ideological conference designed to re-write history in order to libel the name of liberal democracy. I notice nothing has said at the conference abotu the racism of black African nations such as Zimbabwe and Uganda, never mind the overtly racist character of the People's Republic of China. But what would you expect from a collection of imbeciles who have described Castro (Guest of Honour) as "one of the world's leading democrats".

A lot of political stunts -

The black peoples of the world got conned by the Arabs, Jews, and Bush. Knowing that Americans weren't keen on reparations, and not wishing to give any discussion of racism much of a spotlight, the Bushies focused since January on ways of boycotting the event. The Arabs, who are known to be quite racist on occasion, provided an ideal excuse for Bush to withdraw byu attacking the growing racism of Israel. So far as I can tell, about 25% of all ethnic groups are racists. This conference seems to have brought out the worst in them all, so the people who had the most to gain from a logical discussion got totally stiffed. In contrast, Clinton would have blocked the Arabs, charmed everyone, and signed some generalized statement that would mostly have served to annoy his enemies at home.

sorry -

My system's behaving very strangely tonight, telling me that things haven't posted yet. I don't get it, but sorry for the dbl post. Elsewhere, someone commented on my post before it appeared....

Goldwater had the right idea years ago:

"The time has come to recognize the United Nations for the anti-American, anti-freedom organization that it has become. The time has come for us to cut off all financial help, withdraw as a member, and ask the United Nations to find a headquarters location outside the United States that is more in keeping with the philosophy of the majority of voting members, some place like Moscow or Peking." -- U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater

The conference is a joke.

Lancaster, we are not a "liberal democracy". We are a constitutional republic. In a democracy the majority rules and can override individual rights (segregation).

Shadow, how did you come up with that 25% number? And I shudder to think what Clinton would have done. Where the hell was he when hundreds of thousands of Africans were being slaughtered? Talk about conning black people.

The conference is a complete joke. Interesting that no one has mentioned the specific reason the U.S. gave for walking out.

Miles, the term liberal democracy in the way employed is meant to imply the constitutional republic of which you speak. I do not regard them as being mutually exclusive.

what happened to free speech anytime someone disagrees with america they just leave ... america is meant to be leader of the free world yet bush doesnt give a damn about me ... i never saw clinton as leader of the world either exactly but at least i know he cared somewhat about people outside of the united states too

im pretty sure your news is quite bias the stuff about it being taken over because of Palestine and the Israelis isnt true i saw more on the news here about other stuff happening at the summit that was importent too ... although im sure it would of been a case that at some point Palestine should have a voice and rightfully so just because america might not like it doesnt mean they shouldnt speak (free speech remember) and remember the gaza strip is called the occupied territories i dont understand how shadowsource can side with terrorism like the ira for trying to win back thier country and then completely side with the Israelis in this case the Palestines were there first remember

this just makes america look so bad again in the worlds eyes i dont know how long they can keep doing this because before they lose respect of all world nations ... if this was england doing the same thing i'd be pretty ashamed ... and yes i would speak up here about it and bash them here ... sorry i seem to be bashing america a lot its just bush as a "free world leader" is a pretty poor one so far

The US walking out has nothing to do with free speech. Where did that come from?

You guys are in a tizzy about the delegation walking out, but no one has said why.

there is no why apart from the fact that other nations MIGHT of disagreed with america on some points ... so they left

and yes i think free speech is a valid point considoring how much america values it ... they dont seem to carry forward those values into world summits like this

America knows that Zionism=Racism is wrong. So does all of Europe. In today's newspaper, they said:

"French PM Lionel Jospin said in Paris yesterday that his country may lead the EU in a similar walkout if text equating Zionism with racism is included in the conference resolution."

Pokerman knows

Thanks, Pokerman.

The conference has zero credibility, and showed it by declaring Zionism "racist". How ludicrous.

The only shameful acts commited were by the countries that support the resolution. They can kiss my ass. I don't expect any different from Arafat.

The Palestinians are commiting suicide by provoking Israel. They agreed to the peace accords a long time ago and suddenly decide they don't want to live by them anymore. Arafat can stop the violence in a second by waving his hand. But instead these terrorist animals continue killing murdering innocent men, women, and children. They don't want peace, they want what they think is revenge, and it will never stop until Israel grants them their wish of eternal life.

Fuck the conference and the Palestinians.

Amen.

The whole reason we didn't send Colin Powell to the conference is we didn't want to lend any credibilty to it. Though looking back at it, it may have been even better if a man of the stature of Mr. Powell walked out of the procedings.

Reminds me of a joke.....an Israeli and a Palestinian see an old looking bottle on the road. They race for it and reach it at the same time. In their struggle to take the bottle from each other, the cork pops out and a Genie appears. The Genie says, I will grant each of you ONE wish. The Paestinian speaks up first..."I want a steel, re-inforced wall around all the Palestinian lands, 10,000 meters high to protect our people." The Genie says, "Done". He turns to the Israeli and says, "And you?" The Israeli says simply "Fill it with water."

The idea of Zionism isn't racist...but the application of it in the nation of Isreal sure is.

Miles...when Isreali soilders shoot children for tossing rocks is that any less the behavior of predatory animals?

Can Isreal do not wrong?

Bullshit.

You know there are arabs in Isreal that are not Palestinians but are Isreali citizens.

You tell me....why is it that they are denied good jobs?
Why is it that they are forrbidden to even write a letter to other family members overseas?
Most arab families are still organized into "clans" of a sort still in our modern day.and the families reach all over the place.

Isreal is just as much an animal to others as Stalin was to his own Russian citizens.

PS.Black Isreali Jews{Falashas} are treated like scum there as well, many times you would think they might be arabs, considering the treatment.

Arafat cannot control it.....because he never could.

The battle for peace

The news reports do not accurately reflect the true mood of the Conference. It was a sight to behold! Grown men and women who should know better acting like recalcitrant schoolchildren without a schoolmaster present.

What had potential quickly devolved into a slanging match with no one even attempting to take the high ground. All the old bitter rivalries and hatreds were trotted out in the heat of passion. Nothing of value was accomplished at all. The schisms were shown to be as wide and impassable as ever.

It was the fault of the Conference organizers, they allowed it to get out of hand. Some of whom were clearly delighted at the turn of events.

The U.S. is not to be condemned for departure, there were many others who would have gladly followed except domestic and international postures prevented it. Most merely downgraded their delegations.

I don't know why they worried so, the thing was supposed to be for Non- Governmental Organizations (NGO) and grew. It proved to be a monumental waste of time. Pity!

i agree with you CH ... i find it totally amazing how some americans believe Israel can do no wrong the news reporting that you get is VERY bias ive watched cnn and abc news and they never seem to give the full picture i think thats pretty bad for you ... i know news reporting is getting like that here too ... BBC thankfully are still very good here

also to say that Palestine caused the current trouble is crazy it was caused when Ariel Sharon visited temple mount on Ramadan .. imagine Hitler visiting a Jewish remembrance service its the same thing ... Arafat was working towards peace its Israel that ruined it ... the current troubles are terrible and i dont know how they are going to fix it ... but to blame the whole Palestine people is nuts ... its like blaming all the catholics for the real ira in northern ireland

Out with it

I found your post but it was empty, edited out by you. I'm curious. What did you say and why did you feel compelled to immediately annul it?

Ok, folks -

Miles: The 25% number as a poprortion of racists in any ethnic population s my guess, and it's worked pretty well for me so far, traveling widely, living in a very international city. My last night in Sweden, for instance, I saw a bartender hop over to punch a Morroccan for talking with a Swedish woman; as I said, racism is everywhere. And I lived through the Tawana Brawley mess, so I'm pretty aware of how a proportion of African-Americans is racist, too. The number seems right, as a general proposition of population. I would guess that it's th share of highly motivated Albanians and Macedonians in the new zone.

I'd also guess that it's the hard-core percentage of Israelis who dream of ethnically cleansing what they call Judea and Samaria. The basis of the settlements is racist, and it's the settlements that have undermined and destroyed the Oslo Accords, just as Ariel Sharon had always hoped they would do. Sexy-girl, I do not support the Israelis at this time, and I wish our legislators had the guts to call them on their use of US-supplied weapons to assasssinate Palestinians. At the same time, I think Yasser Arafat has been a sloppy disaster for the Palestinians for decades, certainly since he left his best troops to be destroyed during Sharon's invasion of Lebanon in 1982. The only reason Arafat is still alive is because the Israelis regard him as a useful idiot; they have murdered what they regard as his sharpest lieutenants for many, many years. I am sympathetic to both populations, and the entire situation makes me sick. At the time of his death, I considered Rabin the only world-class leader, apart from Mandela, and the fact that the Israeli right murdered him and managed to replace him with a series of militaristic buffoons (yes, Barak, too), speaks very poorly of the country's direction.

The Palestinians have made bad choices before: They backed the posturing idiot Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War. But they will not go away. So the only possible way for israel to fulfill its present settlement-supporting strategy is to eventually force millions of Palestinians out of the West Bank. Will the world go along with this? Or will the Israelis remove the settlements that are not contiguous with the border and go for peace again?

Both sides have pathetic leadership. Hanan Ashrawi is brave and smart, but she's a woman and a Christian, so she won't go far.
