US versus UK Comedy: Monty Python says Go American!

Ah yes. The Royle Family...

Who would have thought they could make a TV comedy series based on one family watching TV night after night and talking about their humdrum existence with long spaces of silence in between as they watch the screen.

Small quote (not verbatim)

NAN: (Going to the toilet) I'll take the Sun and the News of the World and what's that free newspaper called...I like that one!

FRANK: Bloody Nora! How constipated can you be...you've got half of Fleet Street under your arm...

Well that didn't work...

Let's try this...

The Royle Family:

Awww... come on!

Call me naughty names, or something! That was one of the very first times I've even come close to being impolite, and to a newbie even! You just don't get more crass than that!

*sighs*

I'm just going to have to stick to being one of the white hats of Lit. I just don't do rude well... :(

Ye done fine, Dhalgren, me lad... I apologize for picking on ye.

While I'm groveling abjectly, I may as well apologize to Damien, and anyone else who had to wade through that huge post. :)

I think you're all nuts. The only disagreement I have with Mr. Cleese is that British TV was ever better than American TV. Cleese calls it the "least bad" TV in the world and I think that more aptly describes american TV. The problem with a lot of our perceptions of british TV is that us Americans really only get a chance to see the best of the stuff. Is all British TV Red Dwarf and Black Adder? No. On a whole, American TV kicks english TV to hell and back.

Now, if you were talking about funny cartoons, you'd win hands down. The Simpsons, King Of The Hill and South Park can't be beat.

Indeed, considering British don't make cartoons, only animations by Nick Park and that other fella.

I still maintain that "Frasier" is the best comedy show around at the moment.

Frasier is about as funny as getting beaten over the head with a dull machete.

But look! I could be a writer on the show

"Frasier, you're so corpulent that when you lounge around your summer home in vienna, you truly lounge AROUND your summer home in Vienna"

Ho, ho, ho

Strange that. I heard that Frasier isn't as popular in America as it is in England, probably because the jokes are a lot more subtle and require a lot of thought.

Much like British comedy. Is it a coincidence that the most consistently funny program on British TV is "Have I got news for you", a current affairs quiz show which takes the piss out of virtually every single figure/event that's in the public eye.

No it's probably more popular in England because 60 year old jokes draped in obnoxious snobbery is still big over there.

I can see you have a really mature approach to comedy

Go back and watch your Third Rock from the Sun and laugh your ass off.

Copied from Neale's Post:

It so happens I'm running a series of courses at the moment for a small fee!!

:)

Nope, I'm not all that big on the whole sitcom format but I can at least recognize a good one when I see one. Seinfeld was funny. All in the Family was socially relevant. Cheers developed lovable characters. Frasier is just crap for faux-snobs.

Well, each to their own.

Yeah, I suppose. So, you as trilled as I am about Grunwald signing all of those free agents? Go RapS!!!!!

Eh? How you know I'm a Raps fan?

Well, I think we're gonna be title contenders this year for sure, but I'm still worried that our backcourt is a little weak.

Because I'm so god damn smart :p

I'm not sure how one could describe a backcourt that contains Vince Carter as weak but that might be me. Alvin Williams/Chris Childs is one heck of a tandem.

Well I'm thinking of Carter as more of a frontcourt SF player, although this year I'm hoping Mo Pete will develop into that mould so Carter can switch to SG. Whie Alvin Williams and Childs are good, there's still a weakness at guard I feel, especially if anyone gets injured.

No, I was looking for an argument...

Not "It so happens I'm running a series of courses at the moment for a small fee!! " (rude lessons).

And I am NOT looking for being hit on the head lessons either, so don't get any ideas, people!

i have to agree with WriterDom...i am a fan of Rowan Atkinson. i especially like Mr. Beans Christmas when it airs on television.
and he is very good as the sarcastic Black Adder.

as far as John Cleese and his comments about British or American comedy, you have to remember to take his remarks with tongue in cheek. He is a comedian dont forget.

Huffy! Huffeee!

I was only passing on information is all...

But for you the fee's now doubled...

No. I tell you what. Don't bother! I don't want any rude people in my classes!!

Sheesh!

:p

Some of that British comedy must be good because it sticks in my mind forever. That whole parrot routine, when he keeps telling him it's resting, and the whole "merely a flesh wound" shtick, seem to apply to life and come up a lot around here. :) In general though, I prefer the sappy, insipid, Brady Bunch comedy I was raised on. ;)
