UPS drivers may strike

They will strike, unless they negotiate a new contract by August 1st, 2023. Watch this space.

I will say I saw an article a week or two ago discussing their pay. For what they do....way too high compared to average wages in my opinion. So if they want AC....give up about $20/hr...and it will happen tomorrow.

If UPS drivers feel that they are not being compensated adequately for the level of comfort/discomfort they endure, then they should quit their jobs.

If an employer's workers strike, they should fire them and hire replacement workers.

Unions exist to protect workers and that is what they will do. Your approach only leads to employers continuing to treat employees like shit.

Actually, no. Do you realize how much effort and time it takes to train a new employee? To get their paperwork in order, to get them a uniform, to do the bullshit drug tests, to put them through the HR classes, and the orientation and then to give them on the job training until they can actually do the job without guidance? It's not just time you are paying them, it's time you are paying the people training them. It's expensive.

When a worker stops showing up for work, then they are playing a game of chicken. Is what they are asking for reasonable? If so, the employer should compromise. If they are asking for something unreasonable, then the employer should fire them and find someone to replace them. This should not be a problem for the striking worker - after all, their work conditions or pay was intolerable to the point that they had to strike. Now they are free to find a better job.

No, the problem is that our society is centered around the idea that "it's all about me". We have been trained to think that we deserve a job at the pay we want at the hours we want with the working conditions we want and if we don't get it, then we are entitled to just stop working AND keep our jobs until we get what we want. I mean seriously, how privileged are we? Imagine that you hire someone to mow your lawn or fix your sink and halfway through they decide that the amount of money that you agreed to pay them wasn't enough, that they wanted more, and they wanted to work slower and that they wanted you to make their work more comfortable and they would not let you hire a replacement to do the job they don't want to do. It's insane.

If you don't like your job, then quit. If you strike because you don't like your job, and your boss fires you, congratulations.

Aaah yes, doubling down on blaming workers. That's a great look 👍

Yes, I've hired people before. I know exactly how much effort it is.

Sooner or later, air conditioning will be too expensive for all delivery services, on the way to the whole delivery by truck business model sputtering out on high fuel prices. But painting the trucks a lighter color is a cheap and easy step. Refusal to do that much may be a warning of the corporation's decline or demise by stupidity.
Huh? Dude...you really are dense

And the translucent roof makes the whole truck a greenhouse death box. UPS does that to reduce the need for inside lights.
cGVn
But it’s a lighter color.

Air conditioned trucks will kill the trucking business model?
Good luck peddling that bromide to the masses.

He still lives in the 60s and 70s, when running an AC actually did drop mileage by 20%. Technology has come a long way.

How am I blaming workers? If you don't like your job and you don't think you are getting paid, act like a fucking adult and quit.

I mean, at some point you have to ask yourself that. Am I an adult who can handle their own life or not? If you are an adult, then try to get things changed and if the boss says no, then quit. How is that hard?

If you don’t like how UPS does business, don’t do business with UPS. That would be the adult thing to do.

You're so fucking binary about every damn thing in the world. It's not always that simple, but the employer has responsibilities to the employees as well....it isn't just a one way street.

Fuck, if the country existed the way your brain works, we'd still have kids working in sweatshops. There's a reason why we don't anymore.....we've held workplaces accountable by doing things like striking...forming unions....etc.

The employer and the employee made a deal. I will give you $$$ and you do this work. They BOTH AGREED TO THE DEAL. And the good part about this deal is that EITHER PARTY CAN END IT AT ANY TIME.

Employers are not adoptive parents. They didn't agree to feed and clothe and shelter you and give you everything you want. They are running a business and they need your help. You need money - it's a trade, not an obligation.

Employers have the responsibility to follow the law and pay the worker what they said they would. That's it.

Now, if you want to talk about responsibility, what about the worker's responsibility to show up for work on time every day? Oh, that's different? Oh, when they want to strike, it's cool for them to just walk off the job, but it's the employer that has the responsibility to fix it? Fuck off.

Employment is a trade. You trade your time and effort for $. If you don't like the deal, then leave. Oh, sure, try to negotiate a better deal - I hope that everyone finds common ground and makes a better deal. But if your boss isn't going to meet your demands, then he should be able to fire you for not showing up to work.

So if working conditions are part of that deal and the employer breaks that deal, your only recourse is for the employee to quit.....not any responsibility to the employer.

Strikes are negotiation tactics...sorry you don't agree with them.

https://labornotes.org/2018/01/ups-drivers-beat-forced-overtime-during-holiday-rush

Many people have excuses for delivery companies abusing workers because they like the convenience of home delivery. They don't want to go back to doing their own shopping.
I don't consider paying $40/ hr and benefits abuse. It is a cake job except during the holiday season. But then...they get time and half. Now, having said that...should the company transition to having AC in the vans? Sure. But I will tell you what...not many jobs out there that pay what they do requiring no education and minimal training.

In the UK, planned strikes by Royal Mail workers and train staff have been canceled as a mark of respect for the passing of the Queen.

I'm not sure why or what effect that cancelation will have.

If the employer is not giving you what you want, yes, you quit. By all means, ask the boss for changes you want, but if they say no, then you really only get to choose between staying or leaving.

Strikes are negotiation tactics, yes, so is the threat of mass layoffs.

Or you negotiate for better working conditions.

Yes, as a business owner, management will have to decide if it is easier to give the workers what they demand or to fire them all and hire new workers.

Exactly.
