Unwanted ear worms

My grandson is 17 and is in Brazil as an exchange student. Growing up we had him a lot. In fact his great-grandmother (who lives a short way from us) was his daily childcare person until he started kindergarten. After he started school we had him for at least one weekend a month. We are very close to him.

His grandmother got a text a couple of days ago from him, "Grandma, they have a new duck song!"

When I asked her what that was she told me that she would play the duck song for my grandson when he was very young and he loved it. He loved it so much they played it over and over. I made the mistake of asking her to play it for me. She did. And she was so pleased that my grandson remembered it she played it a dozen times. Since then the damned thing has been stuck in my head, an irritating, ongoing ear worm! "And he waddled away, waddle, waddle". FFS!

So for those who have never heard it, here it is. Be warned though, it might get stuck in your head like it did to me!

No wonder this adult man didn't graduate beyond running a lemonade stand. He has terrible business sense!

Oh Lord yes, I remember the duck song and video thanks to my kids, now some years ago.

I have my kids to thank for revealing many viral-Internet ear worm songs to me.

Nope, nope, sorry Simon I AM NOT going to click on that link. I already have one stuck in my head. If I put another in there I'll be a raving maniac!

See? I'm so flummoxed now I can't even spell my own handle correctly!

Got any grapes?

Still can't check they've been added to the shopping order without using that tone of voice.

I had an earworm the other day so I gave the earworm to my character and wrote it into my story. 🤣

I'm young enough to remember the duck song (not through my kids, who don't exist). They used to play it at assemblies when I went to school, much to the delight of the younger students and the dismay of the older ones. ;)

Many years ago I played in a community band attached to a theater troupe. "Rubber Ducky" was in our repertoire.

Even worse... there's a "claw" machine at the local Denny's that dispenses tiny rubber duckies. For grins, last week I fished for one to annoy/tease my wife, as we met in that band. The server was fascinated by our antics, and I asked her if she knew the song. She said she didn't, and I sang the first verse. "Oh, yeah! I remember it now!" She was amused.

Now available in metal!

That's great. I didn't know that existed. My first exposure to the song was in its sampling in the Rihanna song Live Your Life. Then my kids exposed me to the goofy viral version, then I saw the video of the original band's goofy low-budget Euro video, which was endearing. It's a catchy song. The metal version is fun.

For metalling up your preschool songs, I recommend Slay Duggee - here is their improved version of Baby Shark, for example.

The name comes from the fantastic BBC show Hey Duggee (a-WOOF!), famous for the Stick Song - get your kids into rave culture early...

The song reminded me of one curious fact. It might take at least some musical education for one to understand it properly. Anyway, this particular song is based on a very popular and recognizable musical "circle," so to speak. "a-F-C-G"
One afternoon I indulged myself in trying to come up with all the songs I could remember that feature that same circle and I was stunned by both the number and the incredible popularity that most of those songs reached. There is definitely something that makes people love songs and melodies based on that specific "circle."
