The European Eel is a great animal for weird facts.. where to start even?

apart from the whole - having five different stages of development (with the initial phase not even looking like an Eel) - there is the fact that they don't have a specific gender until later in life and this is (more often than not) determined by how many other Eels are around them. A higher density tends to produce more males. In the UK, this means the West coast has more males (closer to the Gulf Stream which helps carry them) and the East will have a higher percentage of females.
