I punched a button on the car stereo, queued up the song that really fit the day I'd just lived, and laid the seat back, letting the drum work pound deep into my body and against the car windows. Five minutes later, I pulled out the keys, exited, and -- seeing my aggravated neighbor staring at me -- said with a feigned smile, "I don't care anymore."

Inside, I tossed my bag and coat onto the hallway chair and stepped into the living room, about to call out for anyone who might be home -- and stopped short, as I looked across the room and found her, staring my way with a smile...
