Unable to send PM's

Hello everyone, and I hope someone can help me with this.

Since two days ago, I can't send PM's to anyone. I apologize if it's some banal thing, but I'm at loss as how to solve it.

Here's the message I keep getting:

The following errors occurred when this message was submitted:
1. (user name) has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.

At first I thought the problem was on the friend's side, since I'm receiving PM's normally. Then it turned out that I'm getting the same message no matter who I try to send a PM to.

Does anyone have any idea what it is about? There's nothing in the Options panel that would suggest how I could solve it, and I wasn't changing anything in my options anyway. What's worse, the same thing happens when I try to PM from this account as when I try to PM from another alt, so creating another account isn't a solution.

I'd appreciate any help immensely.

weird. try PMing me, please. i just sent you a PM so first, try PMing me w/out replying, then try replying to my PM. those 2 things might work differently.

Silverwhisper - thanks a lot for responding, but the same thing happened as it does when I PM anyone else. I got your PM, but I wasn't able to PM you back (as a reply or otherwise). I got that same error notifications as I hit the submit button.

I've also experimented with skins and pretty much everything else there is in the Options panel, but to no avail.

Does anyone else has any idea?

The bizarre bit of the problem is that I (obviously) can't even PM the administrators to enquire. If no one knows how to solve this, would someone be willing to PM them in my place?

I'm having the same issues. I can get pm's, but can't respond to them. Glad to know that I'm not the only one with this problem.

wetsub was having the same problem. Some one had already helped her before I tried. She said the issue was resolved so I hope whoever helped her might see this too.

hey i had the same problem, and dirtykitten and rawhumor were kind enough to help me... dirtykitten brought up the point you might need to post a ertain amount of posst in order to pm. i didnt check after each post but after i had posted 8 i was able to send out a pm

Okay, go into edit options, and check the box saying enable pm's, if you haven't already done so.

I'm relieved to hear there are people who are having the same problem! I started feeling like I'm in some exclusive nightmare, able to hear everyone but not to talk.

So far nothing in the way of solution, though.

I do have the PM's enabled (I don't think I could receive them if I didn't), and that's how I exhausted the options pretty soon – other than that one checkbox, there's nothing else concerning PM's available to tamper with. I think, at least?

As far as the number of posts goes, I don't know if that could be of consequence either. Up to two days ago, I was happily PMing for two years, and my other account is equally virginal. (What can I say? I'm shy in public. ) I'll try and check the rules, just in case it's some kind of a new rule, but I'm not very optimistic.

In any case, thanks everyone who responded, thanks bobsgirl and LadyG for your PM's, (and a special thanks to bobsgirl for PMing the admins, though I haven't heard from them yet) but just like with silvewhisper's and anyone else's, I got them but I couldn't respond to you.

I guess I can only wait for the admins' response for now. Or could someone maybe PM the people who've had the same problem in the past but they solved it?

It really feels awkward, not being able to do it myself… Not to mention how aggravating it is not to be able to talk to friends other than by emails. If I manage to get to the bottom of this, I'll post the answer here for anyone else who might find themselves in the same situation.

In the meantime, if anyone has more ideas, any help is very much appreciated.

Yeah, it's pretty unnerving to wait. There's emails and IM's and all, but I still feel cut off from friends. Still, it's now in the hands of the powers that be, so I shouldn't be whining.

It's odd, though, that there aren't more people who've had the same problem. Anyone? I checked everything before I started this thread, but a part of me is still afraid that it's going to turn up to be some embarrassing omission on my part. A friend even suggested I should switch from IE to something else, but I think he just hates Microsoft.

GentleMirage, if you're still reading, do you still have the problem too? I'm starting to consider the number of posts theory after all.

well, i for one am always happy to recommend people surf using something other than IE. personally, i have only good things to say about opera, and others are big big fans of firefox, both of which offer tabbed browsing, a feature permitting you to run one session of the browser but view multiple sites simultaneously. they also kill pop-ups when configured correctly. :>

if the hypothesis about minimum postcounts is correct, however, it would make sense that newer users wouldn't know about PM being disabled: if they're new to the site, they might not even know they can't. if so, congrats on being an alert user. :>

Well, now I've reached the monumental number of ten posts, with no changes to speak of. Someone suggested eight posts would be the threshold so I've a feeling the main fault of this experiment is that it could go on forever.

As to my handle, that was some pretty apt profiling there… Personally, I prefer basil on my tomatoes, but it just didn't have the same ring. Glad it sounds nice, though.

Problem solved! After all, it was the post count that mattered. I tried after the 11th post, not expecting anything to happen, and suddenly the PM did go through.

For future reference to whom it may concern: the landmark for sending PM's is currently somewhere around the tenth post. If your post count is lower, that, and not some anomaly, is preventing you from sending PM's.

So that's it. I'm breathing a sigh of relief, and apologizing to everyone on the HT board, including Laurel and Manu, for raising uproar about what turned out to be a completely trivial issue. I know: I should have at least had the good grace to bother you all with fine points of anal sex, instead of this completely unexciting question…

Still, all's well that ends well, and I thank everyone who was kind enough to offer their help, and sw, cordial thanks to you for keeping me company in my thread. You're all great. Hopefully I'll be able to do a good deed of my own one of these days.

They probably don't want people making alts just to send PMs or to have zero-post people spamming the regulars with "Wanna cyber" PMs.

A lot of people have been talking about the inability to send PMs lately. I thought the post count was around 5, but it might be 10. Either way, I think it's a relatively new rule.
