Oops! I think I have gone and confused Red Dwarf with Black Adder again. Apologies!

No apologies necessary, you couldn't have known. I wish you received some of these programs over there, they're worth watching.

We do get all the afore mentioned programs, (with the exception of that "Porraidge" one you listed.) I was just trying to explain that Red Dwarf and Black Adder don't particularly appeal to my personal tastes. (Apologies once again for the confusion.)

I'm just more of a Fawlty Towers/Are you Bein Served/Mr. Bean kinda gal. I do know many who do adore Red Dwarf, though. It has quite a fan base here.

Then you'd probably enjoy Alan Partridge, The Day Today and Phoenix NIghts.

I'm suddenly reminded of a movie that I enjoyed some time ago. I don't think it ever widely known, but it had me in stitches. Lock, Stock, and 2 Smokin' Barrels I think was the title.

Absolutely fantastic film. Very famous over here and one of my personal favourites. Surprise hit, simply because the biggest star was an ex-footballer who'd never acted before.

Think I might have to watch that tonight.

I don't get the Nip/Tuck phenomina *L* Just isn't my thing.

Ahh you can't beat a bit of Jonathan Creek if we're talking about damn good UK telly!

Actually if i can persuade Alan Davies into having a threesome with hubby and I , hubby would be delighted. He quite fancies a bit of Jonathan creek. It's the hair apparently.

Or Lawrence Lewellyn Bowen :p (Hair again)

hmmm what an image ;)

I'm shocked it is popular there! I would have thought certain scenes might be viewed as somewhat stereotypical.

I can see how N/P would be an aquired taste. I quite enjoy anything that involves taboo and/ or extreme gore. My friends refuse to watch movies I recommend ever since I convinced them to rent "Ravenous."

im a sucker for all things british... monty python...even though they have become the "in" thing, i cant not love it!

Abfab
black adder, love it!
when mom was here, we spent many hours watching changing rooms. i think more for the accents and the rooms were always so much different than ours...plus...i had a thing for carol when she was hosting it.
another thing too is that BBC news is ever so much more thorough in their reporting and less biased than anything we have...

Helene, today is the 5th...that means 14 days until Bridget comes out. im so excited i might just burst.
(must admit i dont really care for hugh grant) i know...*gasp*

Sentiment reciprocated! (Though must admit I can't concieve of an actor more appropriate for this particular role.)

FYI, I stumbled upon a wonderful Firth site last evening. Let me know in PM if you wish the URL.

There are some comedies I could name that would have you in stitches. RED DWARF for one, I mean who could forget the despair squid. lol

Off the top of my head: PORRIDGE, a classical in every sense of the word.

FAWLTY TOWERS, if that one doesn't split your sides, you're dead.

BLACK ADDER, series one to six absolutely brilliant.

There are so many more, but those are the cream in my opinion.

Carl
Red Dwarf, yes.
Porridge, yes.
Blackadder, yes.

Fawlty Towers. I'm dead. Hated it.

I suspect the reason our comedies work is that most of them are written by one, or at most two, people, so the comedies have threads and a consistency of style. "Seinfeld" achieved the same thing magnificently because of the huge input from Larry David throughout, as does "Curb Your Enthusiasm". US comedies often suffer from a committee gestation - loads of different writers contributing, and then loads of focus groups afterwards. "The Simpsons" is the clear exception.

One thing we've become crap at is detective dramas. We have nothing of the scale, sweep, intelligence, writing or acting of Law and Order, especially Criminal Intent and SVU spin-offs. It's almost worth enduring Dubya just to see those shows early, but at least they get onto satellite TV here fairly quickly.

For all its' flaws, British news and current affairs is still the best in the world too. Watch CNN to find out what is happening, watch the BBC to find out why and how.

And BBC Radio 4 is the world's best radio station by a large country mile.

I'll second that if only for The Archers (hehe) but go here and search out the comedy. Most of the good stuff is summer programming but they do have 'listen again' on there and on radio 7.

Little Britain, Adam Bloom, Jeremy Hardy, I'm Sorry I haven't a clue.

For Marx Brothers fans there is a re-made series of their original radio shows.

All good stuff.

My favorite British Comedy is definitely Wooster and Jeeves. Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, and some of the funniest dry humour ever. Also loved both Fawlty Towers and Black Adder.

But I also need to say: The final episode of Black Adder (The World War season) makes me cry like a baby every time I see it. There aren't many movies that make me cry every time I see them, but that show does it to me every time.

And speaking of movies, Shaun of the Dead was brilliant.
