UK Local Elections

Everything I'm reading is forecasting that Reform will win the next General Election. Be amazing if Farage ends up as Prime Minister. The guy's a political cat with 9 lives. LOL. He started out wanting the UK out of the EU and that was all, Brexit won, he dropped out of politics, and pretty much got pulled back in, the UK Conservarives went Left, the Labour Party went lefter and Reform and Farage are the result - a true Conservative-Centrist political party - and Farage is a sensible guy. If anyone can pull the UK back from the abyss with popular support, it's him.

Good luck, Nigel.
It would indeed be amazing if farage became pm, as destructive as the trump presidency.

farage is a mini me, a stockbroker cos playing at being a man of the people. Reform has no policies anyone knows of beyond send em back. It’s incorporated as a company not a political party. Brexit was as damaging as trumps tariffs, contracting the uk economy and financed in part by Russian money (check out aaron banks). Be careful what you wish for!

Worth remembering that the Brits were the first Western country to get rid of the slave trade and the Portuguese were the last. The Portuguese were the last in 1888 because the Catholic Church, particularly the monastic orders were reluctant to do without slaves. However, the 1888 law was not enforced and slavery was commonplace in Brazil until the 1940's. As late as 1970 it was admitted by their own government that there were 44,000 people still living in slave conditions (no wages but ' accommodation' provided') in the former colony Brazil. All told some 4 million Africans were exported to Brazil, considerably more than to the USA.

I know a bit about it because my wife is part Portuguese/Brazilian and her family, only 3/4 generations back owned slaves. Not a pretty story.

This isn't true. It's a blatant lie being used as a political prop.

Sweden BANNED slavery in all of its lands and territories the 1500's. Other nations attempted similar bans prior to the UK's loudly vaunted "1st country to..." narrative.

If you want to wallow in pedantic ignorance, admittedly your natural environment, King Magnus banned slavery within Sweden in 1335, however, the Swedes did not finalize the ban on slavery or the trade, and until 1847 maintained slavery in their colonies.

For a lawyer you really are weak on detail. You might find the Somerset v Stewart Judgement 1772 instructive. It was the beginning of the end for both slavery and the trade in civilized nations.

Derpy can’t even get “CURRENT events” (pun not necessarily intended) correct.

😑

Derpy just claimed that DonOld’s budget calls for cuts to defense spending…

😳

Chloe, you need to broaden your reading list - a lot. Labour will win the next election with a sharply reduced majority. The Tories will come second and there will be a gaggle of minority groups hanging on here and there. The Brits don't give a rats ass about local government, hence the turnout being less than 25%. Farage will never be a serious alternative.

Polls for 2029 - 4 years away, and based on this it would have t be a coalition govt even if the Conservatives collapse completely. Of course it's 4 years away....

You really don’t understand what Ishtat was getting at, do you???

🤔

A couple of other things:

• Much like the MAGAts, Reform has a ceiling that is currently limited to its toxic base.

• Reform is affiliated with DonOld and the (toxic) MAGAts.

• DonOld and the (toxic) MAGAts are causing / going to cause, and be held responsible for, massive levels of global economic and human pain & suffering, which will ultimately attach to (tar) any (toxic) group (Reform) that is affiliated with DonOld and the MAGAts.

😳

😑

Reform is going to be going into the 2029 elections tarred by the legacy of DonOld and the MAGAts.

Good luck removing that stain.

I do, but if you look at the polls, if Labour does form a govt it will likely be as part of a coalition. We'll see how that goes between now and then

So, you admit that the UK wasn't "the first"?

As a British Prime Minister once said "A week is a long time in politics" A month ago, Canadian liberals were headed for a total wipeout. now we find they have the most seats in parliament. Likewise, Australia's conservative Liberal National Coalition were supposed to win but they got trounced by Labour. Nigel Farage is very good at shouting others down but his attempts to project this weeks results onto a General Election in four years time are ludicrous.

Yep. 2029 is so far out anything coild happen between now and then. Your point about teh switcheroo in Australia and Canada is a good one.

For Labour, that would be logical, atho they and the Conservatives are not so different these days

Bullshit.

The conservatives left things so fucked up that Labour HAD TO make some “Tory like” decisions on spending, etc, but Labour STILL did / is doing things that separate them from the conservatives by a wide margin when it comes to priorities on spending, etc. (Spund familiar???)

And not having a fight about trans rights or immigration at this critical moment in time was pure pragmatism: (The ACTUAL Democratic leadership in the U.S. did the same thing in 2024 by excluding trans athletes in Titlte IX rules and agreeing to a VERY CONSERVATIVE border security & immigration reform bill). Labour has all it can do just to stabilize the government (form a coalition) and stabilize the economy after the conservatives and the “Reform” types fucked everything up (See: Brexit, etc). so some social issues will necessarily have to take a back seat.

It is what it is.

What’s going on with UK politics is VERY familiar.

What exactly are these LibDems anyway? Are they to the right or to the left of Labour?
Once upon a time, they sat between Labour and the Conservatives. With the shifting of Labour further to the right, they are to the left of Labour on some things and not on others. In 2010, they formed a coalition with the Conservatives but were totally outplayed. Whenever there was bad news to deliver a Lib Dem member had to deliver it. It has taken them fourteen years to recover the ground lost in that coalition. Personally, I can't see them going into another formal coalition, but they might agree to support Labour on a vote-by-vote basis.

Oh, I agree that the conservatives fucked things up. They got a clear mandate on Brexit and to clamp down on illegal immigration and they walkedaway from their voters. Their voters as a consequence did not vote for them. They deserved to be annihilated at the polls for that and for everything else they screwed up.

🙄

“Brexit” WAS THE fuck up.

And Brexit was hardly just / all about illegal immigration.

DonOld and the MAGAt republicans’ “Amexit” from the global economy, alliances, etc, WILL BE just as big of a fuck up as “Brexit”.

MAGAs trying to promote the Brexit moron Farage is funny.

Brexit is a warning that stupidity has negative economic consequences.
