Ugly comments

Who's to know someone leaving a comment isn't going to come back to see if there's follow up? This is one of those unprovable sweeping maybe yes/maybe no generalizations (except I've seen proof of ones who have, which busts that sweeping claim).
KeithD is right - folk do come back and read/debate in story comments.

I discovered the joys of the "category police" when someone commented, "well, that just took a turn for the worst," to which I replied in no uncertain terms, it's my story, I'll write what I bloody well want. And then I discovered even Erotic Horror fans don't like a bit of GM or Incest drop in their lap unannounced (but were quite happy when the girl gets anal in the chapter before). I subsequently deleted the whole spiel, and wrote a kinder chapter later on, to which I received a rather sweet note thanking me "for getting back on track."

So yes, you can have conversations with folk in story comments. Mind you, my example was a multi chapter thing, so the policeman had been following along for a while and was probably enjoying the yarn until he didn't like that particular bit.

Indeed, when I write a comment, I occasionally check back after a some while to see isn't there any reactions on my input.

Only once so far I have come upon a discussion between two commenters of any length under a story. That seems surprisingly rare thing here, and generally you probably can't expect your response to a comment be seen by original poster, especially if that was an anonymous rant.

However, you can always pretend to have discussion not with the single ranting individual but a group having that mindset, misconception or delusions. Then a clarification response to an insulting rant do make sense.

Readers take those categories quite literally. I've been reminded of that myself on several occasions.

I wish the site was more like facebook (gasp) in that if you replied, the person you replied to would know about it. Or maybe that happens now and I am not smart enough to know.

I don't think anyone comes back to check if you replied to their comment.
Any comments made will be notified on the author's dashboard, but the commenter won't be advised if you as the author have replied.

As noted above, some do come back. I exchanged maybe three or four comments with the same person (a judgemental category policeman) over a couple of days. I deleted the whole conversation about six months later, and actually put a squick warning in the comments of the previous chapter, letting those with delicate sensibilities know that a dark speed bump lay ahead. But even that didn't stop the outraged voting the chapter down, despite the warning.

"Write what I want you to write," said the category policeman. "No," I said, "it's my story, I'll write what I want to write."

Wattpad does that (notifies you of replies to your comments - they have a notifications inbox, similar to but seperate from your inbox). It's a great idea. Literotica could learn a lot from how Wattpad do things.

Careful. The typical knee-jerk response here is "why don't you leave then?"

Ohhhh I like both. Way more readers here for what I write. Wattpad is much more social contact driven. There's no instant visibility the way ther is here.

Presumably that’s because you left a constructive comment and went back to see if the author had responded to it. I’ve done that. But I really do doubt that someone who has left a deliberately negative/offensive comment, and probably 1-bombed the story, and kept their anonymity will return. Why would they? I think they’ll move on to do the same to another story because their purpose is to leave a trail of destruction.

The best thing for the author to do is delete the comment and forget it. Unless you feel it necessary to respond to the comment in some way that you feel will help future readers.

I can understand someone who identifies themselves going back but why on earth would someone who is anonymous go back?

But it remains that it's only an unsubstantiated supposition on your part. And one, I think, that flies in the face of the traits that would motivate someone to negative comment in the first place--to assert superiority and maneuver the target to give in to you. I think you'd go back and check more than you wouldn't.

And, as I've already noted, I've had enough (though it doesn't happen often) personal attackers return when I've erased their initial comment to comment on me erasing the comment to know it happens. But they haven't persisted when I've just erased that comment as well.

I really don't understand why anyone would think this didn't happen.

Yes, even in categories like Romance some readers get quite upset if they perceive a story to be in the wrong category.

For example, my Romance story 'Learning to Love Louise' was generally well received, but one commenter was most upset that one of the characters was dead all along, awarding me 1 star and saying that if he wanted to read about ghosts he would go to the supernatural or horror sections.

Ugly Comments

So glad to come across this post. I've been writing for years, but just recently joined here and decided to start sharing some of my stories.

The 1st one went live this morning. I couldn't believe the trolls and their horrible comments. I instantly changes my setting to no comments for anonymous posters.

I also deleted the worst comments.

It seems disingenuous to me that readers would insult morals, inclinations, gender, plot, sexual proclivities, reality of STDs and fetises on a fictional sex story site. What the heck are they doing here if they're not here to read about sex in all its cardnal faces.

Anyway, it only took me a read through those first few comments to change my settings, resolve to delete the awful ones and completely ignore/refrain from responding to the trolls

By shutting down anon comments you will also miss out on many intelligent comments worth getting, not just idiot fodder. Delete and ignore the garbage is the best strategy, I agree, but shutting down anons - I'd never do that. Half of my worthwhile feedback is anon.

Let me guess, Loving Wives? That is a category littered with troll tracks. You have to have a thick skin for that category or just turn off comments and voting like I do for that category. There are some of my stories that I leave the comments on so I can play with the trolls a little.

I have also turned off anon, but the ones who want to troll or give me credible feedback create a alt ID to do so.

Good luck.

ETA: I actually read that story last night, the writing was pretty good. I could have done without the creampie eating but the rest was pretty hot. I gave you 5 *'s just for the hotness factor.

Some of the trolls think that this type of story it true. Some here might be, but that is besides the point. This is a site based in fictitious tales but in their mind you are writing about you and your spouse. Ignore the trolls and if they are making personal attack, you always have the options of deleting the comments.

If I may make a suggestion, you should consider turning anonymous comments back on. Without anonymous comments, you will miss at least half the positive comments you will get otherwise. With bad comments, you can ignore or delete them. But you can never recover a positive comment that isn't made.

Ugly Comments

Thks Zeb_Carter for the awesome rating and your feedback.

Yes, I tried out the infamous Loving Wives category first. I read another posting here in the authors hang out that I'd wished I'd read before posting my 1st story. Apparently the Loving Wives category solicits extreme comments LOL.

Oh well, in for a penny, in for a pound.

Thanks to the other authors for your feedback on commenting. I may give it another try. Not too keen on having to monitor and delete troll comments on an ongoing bases, but then maybe that's the price of admission as an author. :)

I am very surprised how vitriol the comments were. Here are a few samples:

" You should die, mother F^&ker"
" I hate queers"
"don't every write another story" - That one really hurt :)
" Just another cum sucking faggot"

These were the better ones. There were worse.

Anyway, time to write some more smut out of my twisted mind and thoughts.

Those comments are totally normal, alas.

What does this mean? I admit, I'm not here much lately. Did I miss a memo?

I was just referring to the new efforts to minimize spam. It seems that comments undergo some sort of moderation now before posting. Regime might have been the wrong word.

I have gotten those and many more like them...

"I hope you and your wife die of AIDS!"
"Your wife is a real slut!"

I do delete personal attack comments. Then just the irk their ire I turn off comments after a week or so. :D:devil::eek:

My favorite of the week:

"Never finished it, sent me to sleep."

How are you able to comment then?
