Trump says he and Putin have agreed to start 'negotiations' to end Ukraine war

It appears peace talks are going to happen . . . maybe . . .

BRUSSELS — It was the moment Europeans and Ukrainians have been dreading for months, if not years.

Yet when it finally came, on a wintry afternoon as Kyiv froze, the suddenness and scale of Donald Trump’s peace plan still left Ukraine’s allies in shock.

The United States has effectively called time on its support for Ukraine as it resists Russia’s invasion, with Trump announcing immediate negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and telling Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy to give up hope of taking back all the land Russia has seized.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was the first to divulge America’s position at a meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Hegseth told his counterparts gathered in the Belgian capital that Zelenskyy had no chance of achieving his goal of kicking Russian forces out of Crimea and the east of the country and returning Ukraine to its pre-2014 borders.

ā€œChasing this illusionary goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering,ā€ Hegseth said.

He then warned that America will be pulling back from its commitments to European security, renouncing the historic role it has played since the end of World War II, and set out a stark vision in which European governments will bear primary responsibility for their own defense — as well as for that of Ukraine.

Soon after, Trump extinguished any hope the cold new reality could be avoided. ā€œI just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia,ā€ the U.S. president said in a post on social media.

ā€œWe have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation … Millions of people have died in a War that would not have happened if I were President, but it did happen, so it must end. No more lives should be lost!ā€

Panic in Kyiv as US president demands higher share of GDP than Germany’s First World War reparations

Donald Trump’s demand for a $500bn (Ā£400bn) ā€œpaybackā€ from Ukraine goes far beyond US control over the country’s critical minerals. It covers everything from ports and infrastructure to oil and gas, and the larger resource base of the country.

The terms of the contract that landed at Volodymyr Zelensky’s office a week ago amount to the US economic colonisation of Ukraine, in legal perpetuity. It implies a burden of reparations that cannot possibly be achieved. The document has caused consternation and panic in Kyiv.

The Telegraph has obtained a draft of the pre-decisional contract, marked ā€œPrivileged & Confidential’ and dated Feb 7 2025. It states that the US and Ukraine should form a joint investment fund to ensure that ā€œhostile parties to the conflict do not benefit from the reconstruction of Ukraineā€.

The agreement covers the ā€œeconomic value associated with resources of Ukraineā€, including ā€œmineral resources, oil and gas resources, ports, other infrastructure (as agreed)ā€, leaving it unclear what else might be encompassed. ā€œThis agreement shall be governed by New York law, without regard to conflict of laws principles,ā€ it states.

The US will take 50pc of recurring revenues received by Ukraine from extraction of resources, and 50pc of the financial value of ā€œall new licences issued to third partiesā€ for the future monetisation of resources. There will be ā€œa lien on such revenuesā€ in favour of the US. ā€œThat clause means ā€˜pay us first, and then feed your children’,ā€ said one source close to the negotiations.

It states that ā€œfor all future licences, the US will have a right of first refusal for the purchase of exportable mineralsā€. Washington will have sovereign immunity and acquire near total control over most of Ukraine’s commodity and resource economy. The fund ā€œshall have the exclusive right to establish the method, selection criteria, terms, and conditionsā€ of all future licences and projects. And so forth, in this vein. It seems to have been written by private lawyers, not the US departments of state or commerce.

President Zelensky himself proposed the idea of giving the US a direct stake in Ukraine’s rare earth elements and critical minerals on a visit to Trump Tower in September, hoping to smooth the way for continued arms deliveries.

Putin is Trump's role model. Putin owes his position as Russia's President to winning democratic elections. Once elected he began to increase his power and suppress his opponents. This is what Trump is doing. The difference is that Trump, unlike Putin, never has had majority support. This is why he is likely to exceed his mandate and fall on his face.

*cough* But of course Trump and Putin are going to agree how to end the war...

On the European Continent.. deciding what we European countries are allowed to do, changing borders and annexing territories *cough* countries in other cases *cough*.

I mean, who does not want a cool, strong, macho, and full of vigor and charismatic leader?
One that can make your country bigger, much bigger.. a leader that is worthy of being remembered forever.

.... We have had several of those before.. strangely enough, they all glorified violence, started by being elected.. Then, well.. they were leaders, they knew how to do things, right? Better they stayed in control until they were satisfied.

Come on, it is easy to understand why Putin and Trump are able to see eye to eye.

They are just doing it for world peace, and.. well, it is for the best!

..... Now, should we start to learn Russian or Chinese.. šŸ¤”
I’m going with mandarin. While you’re being distracted, China is just getting stronger.

Russian might not be a bad choice either:
With the sanctions being removed, and the US tripping its own feet, unable to hold back the glee of being to restart the trading with Russia once more.. (gosh, so much potential to do some great business for the States! What smart thinking.)

šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø I do not know, I feel like caught between a rock and a hard place here.

Russia is closer, and I mean.. that does matter in some situations.

Although, China is a relatively safe bet; they have yet to try to annex sovereign countries in Europe.. šŸ¤”

That happens when the US withdraws from the world stage and hands over the keys to Putin and Xi.

Oh, that is a very polite way of saying it.

I mean, you could also say: USA is abandoning thei.... Oh wait:
USA is overbearingly admonishing their so called allies.
- And then abandoning everything.

With the single goal: someone wants to earn more money. šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

I'm not trying to minimize the impact of our actions, by any means. Long term, the actions we've taken will be felt across the globe for decades.

I don't agree with the breaking of things to clean them up approach. As I've heard said, it's like fishing with dynamite.

And there is the issue.

We don't really have many. Most are just dependents who've grown not only away from US values, but totally arrogant and entitled to our money.

They mostly seem under the impression that the US is obligated to join them in national suicide by totalitarian thought policing of their citizenry while foreigners are allowed to come in and just savage the people and rat fuck the economy, because anything else is RACIST and FASCIST!!! They want to do that, rock on, but we are under no such obligation and we're not going to protect or do business with that kind of self destructive insanity.

Fishing with dynamite...

I do love it when words paints a pretty picture.

Thank you.

I mean.. activating article 5 in Nato (as the only country ever) - we stayed in Afghanistan for 21 years, a war we fought for your sake, your freedom, your rights.
We stayed when USA got tired and told us: this is Europe's problem now.

The refugees.. yeah, you must have been swamped with Afghan refugees, sorry about that.

So, when Bush jr. in 2003 decided: hey, let us start one more war! On a continent that is not ours, let us destabilise that whole region!!

Well, France and Germany were not thrilled, but nevertheless.. your so called allies had your back!
And once more, when the States got tired of playing war, demolishing other countries.. they left, giving Europe the responsibility to clean up the mess.

Which we could not. Too big of a mess, too many agents and fractions.. Hence why we said it was a bad idea to start that war.

But, oh.. I am sorry, I am being impolite and not recognising your troubles and issues with refugees, immigrants and wars taking place in your backyard.

I mean.. heavens forbid that you had to receive refugees from the wars you started.

Honestly. What did I even expect.

... Refugees, extremists, terrorists... Desperate and radicalised people, from the wars you started.

Helped into our union, by the government that you are removing sanctions from.

Dude. Come on, you can do better.

- Is Trump dissolving the Western world as we know it?

Yes, Cat.

The United States, which used to promote democracy, health, and bilateral trade all around the world is now led by a very selfish man and his supporters who want to emulate him because they look up to a bully billionaire who is above the law.

The rest of the world will probably be better off from here out if they rely on other trade and defense partners.

BTW, many Californians would like it if Denmark bought California. Maybe they can call it red and white land .šŸ‘

It's not the USA's fault most of Europeans went full on open borders woke tards and called anyone who questioned it "FAR RIGHT!!" or "NAZI!".

Europe CHOSE to import an archaic anti-European rape culture. Democratically so in most if not all cases. That means you Europeans have some responsibility for the problems that came with the "diversity" YOU promoted and voted for so much.

Dude, come on, you can do better.

Yeah.. I know, and I also know that not everyone thinks like your president.

But.. you must admit, whether people are republicans or democrats, it does not really matter: there are a great majority of Americans who thinks that USA got nothing to do with the war in Ukraine.
Who does not understand why USA cannot do business with Russia (so much potential to earn money!)
Who cares more about what is going on in America, than that old and far away place that is Europe.

It is so easy to be lulled into the belief that USA is the big wallet, paying for everything.. but first of all: USA is approximately the same size as Europe.
And when it comes to the war in Ukraine, Europe stands for more than 60% of the aid/donations.
Telling us to step up and do more, I am starting to see some issues.

This whole situation is awfully complex and difficult.
It is national economy, private economy, private beliefs and values all mixed together.

But, the moment you have a leader who says that violence is the answer. Who starts to break 80 years of alliances, for own private gain. Who encourages to ethnic cleansing.
šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

I cannot see how this can ever be fixed.

Yup, Democrats HATE America they HATE being Americans.

They can't figure out why they lost to the most hated man in the world in an American popularity contest though.
